When I retired, I sold my house and moved full time into my RV. I traveled for 2 years and then leased a lot in New Mexico. The lot was $15,000 outright, which I got back when I left after 4 years. Monthly HOA was $110. Only other expense was propane. Look up Escapees RV Club on the web and check out their co-ops. They have about 11 across the country. There are many retirees, including retired military, who live full time like this. And I made tons of friends during my RV days too.

Why have you put your email address on a public forum?

That doesn't seem wise to me - and of course it wouldn't be wise for others contact you by email when they don't know you either.

There are many places throughout the US where home ownership is still affordable. The key is what your particular needs are. I took a bit and went to various states on Zillow and Realtor dot com, and put in this criteria...
Houses, or manufactured for sale.
priced up to $100,000.
no hoa.
Most will be small, but, as we age out, that's not necessarily a bad thing. (I'm thinking heat and cooling wise).

Granted, you're not going to get a Mc Mansion and most of the desirable ones will be rural, so again, depends on your situation. (health, ability to drive,or need for other service's etc.).
It also depends on what your skill level's are. For instance... are you able to repair minor things yourself, or do you need professionals for every little thing?
Not for everyone I'll admit, but, it is doable.

Have you ever considered moving to a more affordable country? I'm not suggesting that you move to Thailand, but what about Mexico or Panama?
Costa Rica is a country that offers permanent resident status to foreign nationals who have an annual income of more than $15,000 USD. Costa Rica is a country with a well educated population, stable government, and no military force. The capital city has an English speaking population of around 20,000 people, who come from the USA, Canada, the UK, and other nations. There are 2 English language newspapers, and good internet services, so you can watch US or Canadian TV programs. here is a link to an information site re Costa Rica.

While Costa Rica is still considered relatively safe compared to some of its neighbors in Central America, there has been a noticeable increase in violent crime linked primarily to drug-related activities. This has led to a reevaluation of the country's security policies and public safety measures.

In 2023 (latest data) Costa Rica experienced a significant increase in homicides, largely driven by organized crime, especially in relation to drug trafficking.

I'm 73, my wife 69-living on SS- and have to find a place to live right away!

Maybe just sit down together and make up a plan. If you can still work part time that's gonna help a lot.
Most likely a couple needs around $50,000 a year to be comfortably poor. $75 - $100,000 gets you ok
many states. If a Carribean home sound great and you have the means check it out if you're interested?
Looking at your bucket list together sounds like a great plan. There are plenty of run down homes for rent.
If you have the skills maybe a fix-upper is a good deal. If you now have no home. If you have one and paid
for I would guess that's the best plan, just plan it right. ... :coffee: ... Taxes reduce in many states for elderly.
If you have a great home there is always the Loan and then it passes to them later on. Living/Family Trusts?

If you plan managed care - low cost housing, I guess that's your decision to make if you qualify? Sort of sounds like self
reposition of everything to me. I could assume you have already had those discussions about your options though.
I know many do choose low-cost multiple housing. That takes some time to get used to though. Think many are
singles though. People left with nothing but their shirts and those well worn.

Open a worn used tire business? A mom and pop shop. Sell advice. Those sort of endeavors. Been to Florida,
Alabama, Texas, Arizona, California, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, won't go back.

Most likely if your home is paid for A trust ? When you gone it won't mean much to ya. The survivor goes on too.

You could say exactly the same about the USA, in terms of crime, gangs and drug trafficking. JIM.

I have friends who moved to Panama last year because they were having a hard time making it here in the US. They love it.
My son and his wife are retired military and they are moving to South America this year. He can live on his retirement very comfortably and not have to go back to work. They are moving to the same town that her family lives in so it wonโ€™t be too strange for them. Just in the year since he retired, they have run through the savings just trying to get by here in the US.

And I do. There's dangerous places right here in the USA. I believe I could say the same about Canada.

Point is, you don't have to leave the country to live on SS. My wife and I do it quite comfortably. Takes hard work and the resolve to avoid the temptation to live beyond your means.

But you will miss him........I can't stand the thought of not living near my son, even though I hate, hate the weather in NY.

Tina can you share what country they are moving to

There are cheap places to live in the USA such as Wichita Kansas. Iโ€™d move to one of those places before I would move to another country.
But there are trade-offs... personally I wouldn't be willing to make them. Yes, Wichita has a lower cost of living, however:

(from AI)
"Wichita, Kansas has a higher crime rate than other metro areas of similar size. In 2022, Wichita's violent crime and property crime rates were higher than the national average."

(from NeighborhoodScout Security Gauge)
With a crime rate of 59 per one thousand residents, Wichita has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes

I am looking for real information not AI. We almost moved to Wichita last summer. Real estate is high and higher end is at DFW price points.
