Is there anyone or anything you actually hate?

Hate is a strong word. I agree with those who say hatred hurts the hater more than the hated. Disagreement is acceptable but hatred should be overcome...IMHO 🙂
Does anyone think it is impossible to stop hating? Does anyone think hatred is healthy?

You have to understand what hate means. You can hate the crime and despise the perpetrator. I do understand what you are aiming at. Last night I watched a program about an RAF officer who chased and caught many of those responsible for murdering the RAF POW's whose escape was immortalised in the movie, The Great Escape.

In the film the escapees were executed together by machine gun. In reality they were shot individually, by a single bullet in the back of the head, in a direct flouting of The Geneva Convention rules of warfare. The executions were a direct order from Hitler. Most of those caught claimed that they were acting under orders and it would have cost them.and their families' lives if they disobeyed that order. But one senior officer was proud of his deeds. He openly hated the Jews and said so. He also hated the Allied bomber crews for inflicting terror on the German population, conveniently forgetting that his country had done just that.

My take on hate is that you can hate the intolerance of those who have an agenda against others in society, but if you think that you can actually hate the perpetrator ask yourself this. "Would you be quite happy to be hangman? Could you go to bed and sleep sound?

Hatred is healthy if you have a valid grievance. If you don't face it those emotions just build up inside of you and can make you sick. I think the fictional character Edmund Dantes aka The Count of Monte Cristo had a valid grievance. He was a teenager who received a promotion in his work and was a day away from marrying the love of his life when he was framed for a political crime and imprisoned for life. Desire for revenge kept him alive. It does so in real life also.

I also agree about hatred [usually] hurting the hater more than the hated. (Although I think some people thrive on hating others; they say that psycho/sociopaths truly enjoy it.) But I admit that I do hate being old and am terrified of getting even older. And in the hopes that it'll stop anyone from chiming in with "Hey, being old beats the alternative, lol!", there are more and more of us who don't believe in the supernatural (the afterlife, etc.) so that saying doesn't mean anything to us.

TY horseless ..I agree but imo detest is a bit strong...to me, it means the same as hate.

I loved that film!!

No. The only thing I hate is "Hate" itself. Hate destroys.

It's not impossible to stop hating...forgiveness is a beautiful thing but you have to grow strong enough to let someone else have the last word. And be smart enough to know when it's not that important to win.

I don't see hate anywhere around me now but I use to see it in the news, mainstream media, and social media.
I have left all of those behind me now...except SF and I don't hate anyone here. I've encountered a bully or two but I've learned to enjoy the sound of my feet walking away.

Hate is just not worth the energy...and it will shorten your life.

I hated the man who abused my youngest daughter from the age of 18-21. I`m talking to the point where he very nearly killed her and was arrested. He alienated her from me because he knew that I could see right through him. Now that 20 years have passed and she is happily married to a wonderful man,my hate for him has certainly dissapated but if I ever run into him I`m not sure that I wouldn`t sock him in the nose!

Nazis. The real ones, not the current wannabe dopes. I was watching a show last night that had the host visiting an old Austrian salt mine where a Nazi cache of stolen works of art had been found and recovered. I thought, OK, this should be fine since the art was recovered in excellent condition. As the show moved forward though, I felt such pangs of hatred I had to change the channel. Those jerks didn't appreciate the art they hoarded there, it was just something they could use to finance their stupid nationalist dream. GRRR!!! Other parts of the mine had collapsed making future art recovery difficult to impossible. I just usually refrain from watching any show featuring Nazis even though they seem to be the rage of documentary fodder lately.

For sure psycho/sociopaths thrive on hatred.Fear of growing old is not uncommon.

Aren't you tired of hearing that🙄..I sure am. It usually follows my saying 'growing old sucks' which I do say and should stop.
I also at times answer with 'does it really' because I have over the years developed a deep belief that there is life after life..

there are more and more of us who don't believe in the supernatural (the afterlife, etc.) so that saying doesn't mean anything to us.
I was surprised on my thread about dying that so many here do not believe in an afterlife. I am trying to figure out why. For me the older I become (I'm 76) and the more I read from philosophies, religions, from ancient times to the present, the more convinced I am in a life after life.
I used to think people believed out of fear but I no longer think that is true. After all if there is nothing we would never know...right? So what is to fear.

I become annoyed/irritated at the overuse of a Nazi label for politicians..but I understand we don't talk about politics here..
You are wise to avoid programs to which you have an upsetting reaction.

Your reaction reminded me of the Buddist statues blown up by the Taliban in 2001. I remember feeling terribly sad over their ignorance.

I've had the opposite happen to me: the older I've become and the more scientific research I've read and studied, the more convinced I am in thinking there most likely isn't anything after life; I think that our brains are the only things that make us us and once the brain is dead, we are no more.

I don't want to sound like a goodie two shoes, but I don't really HATE anyone, or anything. There's a million things I don't like, though. Hate is such a powerful emotion. Yet, thinking about hate, when I close my eyes I think of cops, holding a menacing German Shepard dog from ripping a black kid to shreds. And I've seen others instantly act to harm when they see someone they hate.

The only problem with hatred is that it has the potential to lead to violence. I don't think hatred is healthy at all. Dealing with anger is one thing. Hatred is something altogether different & ugly.
Marciks TY ..I agree...and I think hatred can be both outwardly and inwardly destructive.

I most certainly could if the person I’d hung was a peodophile/child abuser /murderer, safe in the knowledge they could never harm another child

TY...I remember your citing Dr. Kevin Nelson. I have heard similar theories but not as many as the opposite. Guess someday we will know..or not know 🙂

I don't think it's a 'goodie two shoes' to say you do not hate anyone. I do not hate anyone. I am very much a person who always asks/wonders..'why' l look for reasons for behavior. Human behavior psychology was my first love and I still find it fascinating.
But I do often overthink things

Chic, here's a sort-of modern day Count of Monte Cristo story; how this man's hatred and need for revenge kept him alive, and how he finally reconciled and overcame his hatred.

Oh. Guess you'll have to go to the source.
