CNBC: Israel says Pfizer Covid vaccine is just 39% effective as delta spreads, but still prevents severe illness.
Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine is just 39% effective in Israel where the delta variant is the dominant strain, but still provides strong protection against severe illness and hospitalization, according to a new report from the country’s Health Ministry.
The efficacy figure, which is based on an unspecified number of people between June 20 and July 17, is down from an earlier estimate of 64% two weeks ago and conflicts with data out of the U.K. that found the shot was 88% effective against symptomatic disease caused by the variant.
However, the two-dose vaccine still works very well in preventing people from getting seriously sick, demonstrating 88% effectiveness against hospitalization and 91% effectiveness against severe illness, according to the Israeli data published Thursday.
“We have to be mindful that, with time, the effectiveness of these vaccines may wane,” said Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease professor at the University of Toronto. - More at source.

Well, that report from Israel is good news. It's nice to know the Pfizer vaccine is still strongly preventative when it comes to serious illness and hospitalization. I know a number of people who have been knocked out of action for weeks, very sick in bed with Covid. Hopefully, I won't have more names to add to that unfortunate list.

According to recent news from Israel, the hospitalization rate for non vaccinated people 50+ is four times higher than for those who are vaccinated. The chart I saw has about 12 per million vaccinated are hospitalized versus about 48 per million for the non vaccinated.

Other good news is that new cases of Covid are dropping sharply in the UK.

“We have to be mindful that, with time, the effectiveness of these vaccines may wane,” said Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease professor at the University of Toronto.

Why is Dr Bogoch forgetting that once the the vaccine (or the virus itself) informs our T-cells to recognize the coronavirus so it can be destroyed, the T-cells remember this information for many years? When the vaccine poops out, your own immune system keeps on truckin'. Keeps on recognizin'.
Unless it's compromised. Which is why it's important to take care of your immune system.
