It's International Left Handers Day. Anyone Here Left-Handed?

I myself am right-handed. Anyone here a leftie? Was anyone forced to use their right hand? I've heard stories of left-handed students being forced to do that.

I always used to laugh at the part in To Kill a Mockingbird when Atticus asks Bob Ewell if he is ambidextrous. His reply (paraphrased from memory): "No, sir; I can use one hand as well as the other!" 😄

I've always been left-handed, but when my mother taught me to write my name in cursive before starting Kindergarten that was right-handed writing. Once school started they quickly identified the left-handers and taught left-handed writing. My early right-handed signature looked nothing like my left-handed signature, but probably mostly because cursive conventions for letter forms had changed since my mother was in school.

That said, most musical instruments are harder to come by and afford in left- rather than right-handed. So I learned to play several instruments, mainly brass, right-handed.

Good point in regards to musical instruments. It may have been easy to get a left handed guitar but left handed brass instruments or woodwinds were much harder to come by.

I'm left handed when doing most things requiring two hands. I sweep, bat, play golf, chop wood, shoot rifles, etc from the sinister side. I write, shoot handguns, throw, etc right handed. I think I started out ambidextrous but was forced to conform to the norm by my teachers. My first music teacher made me learn to play the guitar right handed and it never felt quite natural to me.

I have a theory that those who are left handed have a creative mind ... is that true for any of you..?

That could be painting, music, .. anything artistic..

Everyone in my family are right handed, except my youngest sister, who is a leftie. They never forced her at school to change... and she out of all of us 5 is the only one who has any real-artistic talent... she's a fabulous Artist, and Cartoonist... she also has a creative mind.. she sees art in everything where the rest of struggle with any imagination...

I have found that the people I've known in my life who are lefties have all had a creative mind..

It was believed that my ancestors were left handed, but it is now thought that they learned to be left handed as this gave them a tactical advantage when fighting with a sword. Their houses were built to be easily defended by left handed fighters.

I am right handed, but my daughter and some of my uncles are left handed.

[I'm fortunate to be ambidextrous, so I can succesfully pick my nose with fingers of either hands.]

"trims my nails too."

I played left-handed ball and golf till my 60-year-old knee started to hurt.
I then played right-handed golf and ball. Grandchildren, I bat both ways and they run. I then tag them out. ... :coffee: ...

I’ve always been left handed.

The only time it was a real problem/danger was learning to shoot a pump shotgun. 😉🤭😂
Funny you should mention that Aunt Bea...been left handed all my life -two things I did right handed- play the violin and shoot a gun! Did you know that 90some per cent of artists are left handed? Only 10% of us are left handed!

Found this online:
Brain scans indicate that left-handed people think differently from right-handed people. They tend to activate the right half of their brain more for certain tasks and functions. Experts suggest that this difference in brain function could make creativity come more easily.

Just like I was saying, Liberty...I just knew that I was right.... that I'd noticed this in all the people I've known who are left-handed...

Yes, I'm a lefty as is my brother ,our older sister is right-handed as were our parents
My brother's wife also lefty, but their 4 kids are all right handed
When I was first learning how to play tennis, the instructor taught me how to slice the ball with top spin. When I hit the ball over the net, it would veer in a different direction, not easy to return

Left handed, not creative at all. Son, lefthanded, draws, plays musical instrument, speaks a second language, gifted student. I am so glad he got all the good stuff.

I have to assume that I started out as a left-hander. I throw, bat, shoot a basketball, kick a football, etc., with my left hand/foot, but writing, handling table silverware, etc., things that my folks taught me are all done righthanded.

Ambi, here. I think we are only 1%. Switch hitter in baseball, both hands in tennis, write with both, and so on. One parent was also ambi. Must have a genetic component.
