I wish i could post this link correctly. And better yet…I wish ALL Americans could and would read the words of Lieutenant Roland B Gittelsohn. But I will try a link….www.recordsofwar.com/iwojimahistory/dead/dead.htm

@Muskrat, that wasn't a real easy website to find & navigate. I pulled it up with this link: The Iwo Jima Operation: The history and facts behind the battle for Iwo Jima

When it came up, I scrolled down to where it said in red: List of the Dead that I have compiled so far can be found at this link .

I clicked on that & read Lt. Gittlelsohn speech. Very moving & you are right, it should be read by everyone.

EDIT: After I posted this, I clicked on "at this link" & it took me directly to his words.

This Eulogy hit so many chords with me.
The Rabbi's words express the duty and saddness of those conflicts.

My dad served in the 1st Marine Divison during World War II.
He was a 17 year old who was involved at Guadalcanal, Peleliu and Okinawa.
Remember how sad he got when remembering his friend who had fallen.

@Feelslikefar, my dad also lost a good friend & would speak about him. I understand what your talking about reference to the sadness. Dad was in the Navy & was at Guadalcanal. I wish I knew more, but he would only talk so much & then stop.

I do believe they were America's Greatest Generation.

Every Marine should know the history of Iwo Jima and why it was so important to take control of that island. I remember when I was in boot camp at Parris Island, the number of men that I spoke with had told me that they had a relative that was either killed there or fought there and survived.

One recruit had an Iwo Jima pin on a neck chain that he said his dad gave him before he left to go to Parris Island. He had a St. Joseph small medallion along with it on the chain.
