Journaling for Mr. Baby

I have one of those journal books I'm writing for my grandbaby. Kind of fun, kind of sad...imagining someday him reading my entries so knows his grandma and family history better. I don't give me and hubby a long life expectancy so it's important to me to get them memories down on paper while I still can.

One page I did yesterday really stood out though. The question was " How has life changed since your grandparents time?". So I had to consider that my Poppy was born in 1888. Wow, what HASN"T changed in almost one hundred and thirty years?

This is what I wrote:

Oh my goodness, So very much has changed! When my grandparents were young they had "out houses" in the backyard. Most people in small towns didn't have inside bathrooms. Electric lights had only been around for a few years. There were victrolas that played music, but you had to crank them to make them work. Radios were something new. There was no television. People went to movie theaters to see movies.

Telephones were wired up in the house and you had to talk to the phone operator to make a call. You would tell her who you wanted to speak to and she would connect you. Even refrigerators weren't electric for many years. People had ice boxes that stayed cold with ice in the back. People got milk and dairy products from a milk man who dropped things at your house. Even when I was a girl they had milk men.

If you wanted news you had to read the paper or listen to the radio. Cars were pretty new in those days. They used to break down a lot and were expensive. Most people walked or took a trolley.

What is mind boggling is imagine him reading the above in say twenty years. Can you imagine how much will have changed by then? Think of the technology, medical advances...I'm only fifty four but remember black and white television, hand held calculators being a new thing, microwave ovens being a new thing...I feel like a young dinosaur.

Years ago my sister gave our grandmother a book filled with personal questions for her to reply to. I still enjoy reading it. It was a brief history of her family, her favourite music etc, questions about her childhood, how she met grandpa, etc etc.
