July 20, 1969: One Giant Leap For Mankind

That's the day we landed on the moon. I hope you saw the first time man was actually on the moon. Didn't you feel you were watching something kids would be learning about in history class?

I figured it out if your under 50, it is history to you.

I remember it well. At first, the astronauts were going to sleep for a while and then do the moonwalk the next morning but they were too excited to sleep so NASA gave the go-ahead. We were glued to the TV.

My grandmother, who love to make fancy cakes, made a "lunar landing cake" that had grey icing, moon rocks that she had made out of marzipan, and a model of the lunar lander that she built out of toothpicks.

Our family was gathered around the TV. My parents tried recording the event by taking photographs and movies off the TV.
The stores were empty, 'cause everyone was gathered around their TVs.

On July 20, 1969 I was a 19 year old kid that been in Vietnam for about five months......I had much more important things to worry about than think about landing on the moon.

It was one of the very few times that the television was on during the day. We were glued to the set for coverage of the launch, landing and reentry/splashdown.

I also remember the conspiracy theories at the time claiming that NASA was filming the moon landing in a television studio.

This photo of a NASA training simulation helped to fuel the controversy.

I remember staring up at the moon and thinking "there are people up there" . It still gives me chills .
