In addition to the picture in the link below, this one him alone is from Nuremberg where he was on Eisenhower's Honor Guard and also he escorted many of the Nazi's to and from the Trials and some of them to the Gallows.

Hats Off and Respect to all the Veterans of all the wars.

My father and all my uncles fought in WW 2 and all of them came home. My mom said it was a miracle that none of them died. My dad’s unit all perished in the Normandy invasion and he had been hospitalized because he was so sick. He didn’t find out about it for a year. He spent 4 years gone first in Iceland and then England.

US Veterans Return To France To Mark D-Day Anniversary (06/06/2022)

"Parades and ceremonies are being held in Normandy, France, to honor the brave U.S. and Allied service members who stormed the beaches 78 years ago to liberate France and other European nations during World War II. NBC’s Kerry Sanders reports for TODAY." (2022)

"In this D-Day Omaha Beach mini-documentary we discover the story by the only motion picture cameraman, Sgt. Richard Taylor, that landed on Omaha Beach on the Morning of June 6, 1944."

My father did not start active duty until after D-day. I do remember him telling me about his interactions with POW’s. Mostly funny stories. Except for the SS. He called them unrepentant- and then a lot of words I can’t type here…

D Day was a superhuman achievement. It took courage to storm beaches, while being strafed with bullets. Plus, the planning and logistics were enormous. There was no way to get troops onto those beaches without working out every detail, and providing special equipment, and continued troop support.

Keep in mind that almost a year earlier (July 1943) the Allies had already invaded Sicily and started the march up central Italy driving the Germans back. For some reason we forget this.

My father said on D-Day, he was in a glider that went behind the beach, but was shot down. He survived but was wounded in the leg. He said he crawled through some brush to a house with a Red Cross sign.

The next thing I remember him saying was he ended up in a VA hospital in New Jersey.

My mother told me that during those days, notices of death or of being wounded came by telegram. When a telegram messenger arrived at your house, you were struck with terror. She told me she almost fainted when the messenger came to her door.

She couldn't open it. She cried and prayed the rosary for courage. She called her neighbors to come. Finally, she opened it and learned he was wounded, but safe.

My father took schrapnel and had great pain years later, after I was born. I remember him going to the hospital when I was little. I once saw this schrapnel they had removed; ugly, black pieces of iron. He walked with a brace after that.

Thanks for sharing your Parents story. They were both very brave!

World News Tonight With David Muir did a wonderful tribute to the soldiers who fought on D-Day. They were treated to a flight by a Delta pilot who took them back to that beach in Normandy. One of the vets was 100 and another was 101 ! I can't find that footage but here's the video report from Today.
