Cosby was found liable on Monday by a civil jury in California for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in 1972.

After a nearly two-week trial in Santa Monica, California, jurors found Cosby, 88, liable for the sexual battery and assault of Donna Motsinger.

The jury awarded Motsinger $59.25 million as part of its verdict.

The loss in court was the latest legal setback for Cosby, who has been accused by more than 60 women of sexual assault, drugging and sexual harassment over the years, though he has denied every allegation against him.

The jury awarded Motsinger $17.5 million in past damages and $1.75 million for future damages, including 'mental suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, inconvenience, grief, anxiety, humiliation, and emotional distress.'

Then, in a second phase of the trial on Monday afternoon, they awarded an additional $40 million in punitive damages.

His Attorney said in an email after the initial award earlier Monday that they are disappointed and fully intend to appeal the verdict.

She did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the punitive damages.

Deliberations lasted about two days.

Jury finds that Bill Cosby sexually assaulted woman in 1972 and...

Cosby was a filthy pig, with no respect towards women or their rights. I once read that one of the co-stars of his show mentioned that these great looking women would appear on his show, and wouldn't have to audition at all. Also read a comment of his saying that if he pays for a woman's dinner, that he should get something back in return. Then you read about all of these drugged women who mentioned waking up and seeing the pig without any clothes on.

One woman who was a stewardess on a plane, said that Cosby was a passenger on one flight of hers, and tried to get friendly with her, and she yelled at him something like, "Stay away from me! You raped my friend!" She actually used the word rape.

Then you read of accounts where if he thought some young woman starting out in show business was attractive, he would tell his or her agent that he would like to tutor her. More like drug her. He should be in prison. But then if you are famous and wealthy, or in politics, you can get away with those crimes.

Probably little or no money left. this will drag out in appeals.
What would money solve after over 54 years. Watched an interview with some of the women he was accused by and some kept interacting with him several times after the first time ....... as they thought he would further acting/ singing career with his connections.
Many took the drugs he offered. It was not like spiking a drink but handing them pills and they swallowed them on their own.
Many extras or such on shows were likely women he did things to.

While disgusting behavior seems like we judge more harshly when we look back. If people working on his shows felt this way or saw something seems a bit selfish to not speak up back then and now wait to say "yeah they knew it". All those accused in Hollywood were KNOWN but other than the passing " avoid them if you can" remark so many never spoke up. I lost all respect for the many women who spoke up after saying they knew or heard rumors etc.

Much like all that is happening around accusations from almost 60 yrs ago on Ceaser Chavez who organized California farm workers in the 60 and 70's. Now California is scrambling trying to rename streets and cover up murals and cancelled a celebration they have had for decades.
His female co-organizer comes out with accusations so why did she stay working side by side with her abuser and even make claims when man was alive.

Many have opinions by a much harsher standard with 20/20 hindsight.
Juries feel good and can pat themselves on the back by awarding large amounts, but they are seldom paid or are sucked up by lawyers.
This should be a real lesson to be very careful whom people choose to make some sort of celebrity or such.

this is what AI said:

As of March 25, 2026,
Bill Cosby was ordered to pay a total of
$59.25 million in damages following a civil lawsuit in California.

The New York Times
On March 23, 2026, a jury in Santa Monica found Cosby liable for the 1972 drugging and sexual assault of Donna Motsinger. The total award is comprised of two distinct phases:

Compensatory Damages ($19.25 million): This initial award includes $17.5 million for past mental suffering and $1.75 million for future suffering, covering emotional distress, anxiety, and humiliation.

Punitive Damages ($40 million): Following a separate phase of the trial, the jury awarded an additional $40 million meant to punish the defendant after finding he acted with "malice, oppression, or fraud".

i think it was confusing because the nyt and forbes both had two separate posts with different amounts.
Didn't I post that in the OP ?
