Just For You Sugar ... and some puppy Mason

For 20yrs during a Naval career I yearned for a dog but being single and moving around so much, couldn't have one.

I retired in 2006 and looked for a dog to bring into my home and found a pup on PetFinder.
Sugar was listed as "Snowball" and said to be an American Bulldog mix :ROFLMAO:
I knew from the beginning that NO WAY she had ANY bulldog in her ... but would never know and still don't know her mix.

A local Humane Society foster lady brought Sugar and Sugar's brother to my home for a visit.
I wanted both but felt I could only have one and chose Sugar.
I would find out later through email exchange with the lady, that Sugar's brother went to Connecticut.
The lady knew absolute no history on the pups. They were found and brought to her. Just the two of them.
Sugar was thought to be about 12wks old when I adopted her on 31DEC06.

When I gave Sugar her name, my mother said, "You can't call a dog Sugar !!!" ... but I did and it stuck.

I have no pictures of Sugar as a pup. I would have her for a year or so before I even had a camera.
The first picture below is the earliest picture I have of Sugar and she is almost a year and half old I think.

A few months after I got Sugar, another dog found me from the streets and I featured Rowdy in the "Heart" dog thread.
After I had to make a difficult decision and let Rowdy go, I did get another bulldog ... Mason.

Sugar was 5yrs old when I got Mason and Sugar raised Mason for me. They bonded and got along great.
Although Sugar was spayed and would never have her own, she was a wonderful mom for Mason.

By nature Sugar was aloof, most at home laying on the grass in bright sunlight just taking in the world around her.
Hers was a gentle, loving spirit. She never harmed anything but her sight and hearing keenly aware would alert to irregularities.

Sugar always had some mobility issues and by the time she was 15yrs old in 2021, she had extreme difficulty standing and moving around.
I put my box springs and mattress right down on the floor so she wouldn't have to jump up onto the bed with me at night.
She also had an infected growth on her lower back that did not respond to treatment and was rapidly spreading.
The vet said if Sugar was sedated for surgery, she would not make it through. I trusted his decades of experience.
I didn't want Sugar to suffer and made a tough decision. I was the last thing Sugar ever saw in this world.
For as long as I live, will never forget the love in her eyes she had for me as The Sugary One lay her head down for the last time.
I'll see you again one day Sugar ~~~

My best to you for the wonderful years you had together.
My condolences for your loss of a beloved pet.

i feel for your loss. It is always hard but i know what you mean about the look in her eyes before she passed.
i've been with several of us ours as they died naturally or wee euthanized cause suffering.

Do keep an eye on Mason. Animals grieve too and as closely bonded as they were it could be hard on him.
