Having widely travelled in Europe where English of course is not the first language I've witnessed similar to this in some places,and it's really the height of ignorance , and embarrassing too and most often it's Brits who do it..
...but this just made me laugh out loud today...
I was waiting to check out of a small hotel in Brindisi Italy. The guy in front of me had no Italian and was getting very frustrated with the clerk, who had no English. He was an American and felt that the hotel was overpriced, old and shabby, and he felt he should get a discount. Given that the place was 500 years old, it was a bit shabby, but nice. I thought it had character.
The tourist thought that by speaking v e r y s l o w l y AND VERY LOUDLY they must surely understand him. Finally in a fit of anger he paid his bill and left.
After he had gone the clerk turned to me
and in perfect English said
“Now you Sir, how may I be of service?”
