Word is of pending lawsuits against the judge, and the sheriff's office involving favorable court decisions, favorable treatment, payment of fines in exchange for sexual favors. And the sex is said to have taken place in the same chambers where the judge was murdered. The sheriff himself wasn't involved in the unlawful activities but a deputy in his department was said in the lawsuits to have participated.

Furthermore, word is that the judge was screwing the sheriff's 17yr old daughter and maybe even the sheriff's wife.

Yep, that'll do it, if true. Sounds like everyone was screwing around there. Then Hizzoner got really screwed. And now the sheriff is totally screwed.

... That's the word anyway.

I was in court and awaiting to give testimony and the man that was charged with sexual abuse of his 16 y/o stepdaughter was sitting with his attorney. The person giving testimony at the time was the man’s wife. Too often when the wife would make a claim, the defendant would have something to say. The first time he did it, the judge issued a warning that if he did that again, he would be in contempt and fined.

He did it a second time and the judge fined him $250. The third time he did it, the judge ordered him to be removed from the courtroom. When the deputies started to make a move towards him, he jumped over the table in front of him and got to his wife just as the deputies got to him. He did manage to reach out and grab his wife’s blouse and tore the sleeve half off. The deputies cuffed him and took him back to jail. He was charged with assault and 2 counts of contempt of court.

Two weeks later, he hung himself in county jail. I guess he didn’t want to spend the next 20 or so years in prison.

Yep, heard the scuttlebutt that this was happening. It may get buried faster than the judge.

Can you provide a link? Everything I've seen and read so far states that the judge was not indicated in any wrong doing. They even claimed that he didn't know the sex was taking place in his chambers. The daughter is a beautiful girl

With so many conclusions to jump to, it will be good to hear the facts fully when / if true facts come to light.
All, at this point, is word on the street. The story may change entirely once facts are revealed.

I think for whatever reason the sheriff shot the judge ... it had to be something deeply personal.
If it were a simple matter of breach of law, the sheriff could have arrested the judge and perp walked him right out of the courthouse.
But no, the sheriff took out a vengeance ... in a bad sense, passionate and unrestrained revenge and retribution.
If the matter involved the sheriff's family, his wife and daughter, he may never wish to admit to it or speak of it, in consideration of them.

In light of word on the street and if true, some might say the judge "had it coming". But I doubt the sheriff is counting on a lack of indictment or jury nullification. If that happens, expect the feds to get involved for violation of the judge's civil rights. The sheriff will be going to jail and he knows he's going to jail. You can't murder a judge in his chambers, in the courthouse and then just walk away. The sheriff well knew the consequences and apparently had accepted them prior to his purposeful, murderous action. If the state doesn't get him, the feds will.

While not substantiating the rumors, the judge's phone did contain some information that could easily be considered inappropriate, per today's local news reports.

Adkins vs. Fields, et al

Feb 3, 2022•

1) Sabrina Adkins filed a civil lawsuit against Ben Fields (a deputy sheriff), unknown supervisors of Fields, and the Letcher County Sheriff. She alleges Fields sexually abused her on multiple occasions when she was on home incarceration under his supervision. 2) Adkins claims Fields violated her 4th and 14th amendment rights. She also brings state law claims against Fields for various torts related to the abuse. 3) Adkins further claims the sheriff and Fields' supervisors were deliberately indifferent in failing to properly train and supervise Fields, which allowed the abuse to occur. She is seeking damages against all defendants.

It is the civil suit by the woman that was harassed by the Sheriff.
The Sheriff did not harass the woman, but did not adequately address complaints about his deputy, per state law.
This current incident is not related, as rumors suggest the judge was boinking the Sheriff's teenage daughter, among others. Her number was on the Judge's cell phone, per the detective in yesterday's hearing.

My error, I meant the deputy sheriff, per post 15.
No worries. It should be noted that one of the issues with ex-Deputy Fields, was some of the acts, he was charged with... took place in the Judge's chambers, as there were no cameras, at that time.

That was rectified and cameras were rolling during the judge's shooting. There were very brief snippets on the local news and not much more during the hearing. I am not sure if there was sound. The detective noted that all seemed calm, until the Sheriff took possession of the Judge's cellphone.

While he might be indicted on several charges, it will be interesting to see what the prosecution ends up going for. He certainly won't be tried in Letcher County, but maybe in Morgan County, where the hearing took place, although the jury pool might react the same.
