Kids playing in the age of Covid

We called our daughter tonight, and she was sitting on her back porch. Her kids were in the back yard, playing badminton with the neighbor kids, using the privacy fence (6 ft. tall) as the net. Perfect social distancing. We could hear them laughing and squealing in the background. They are learning to make do. Grandson had his annual check-up today. At 13, he's officially 1/2 inch taller than his Nana, at 5 ft. 2 1/2. His father is 6 ft. 2 and Dave is 6 ft. so I'm not surprised.

The big 1994 earthquake that struck our area at 4:31 am shook everyone up in a very big way. My kids were 10, 8 & 8. Houses were trashed so everyone was set up on our front lawns.

Well before mid-morning, every time there was a decent sized aftershock (every few minutes), they and the neighbor kids would look at each other, yell "EARTHQUAKE" with great hilarity, pretend they were losing their balance, and throw themselves to the ground. The adults couldn't help but laugh along.

Kids adapt pretty quickly to most situations. The best parents figure out how to stay out of their way.

I love your grandchildren's game, @CarolfromTX! Proof yet again that girls (& boys) just wanna have fun.

My young grandkids are staying connected to their friends with Messenger Kids and Zoom. They are having "playtime" with neighbor kids where they're each staying in their yards and playing across the driveway from each other, or across the back fence.

My daughter Paige did finally take two of her kids to a very modified playdate with a friend's child. The friend had been fully quarantined for a month, same as Paige, and so the Moms sat a few feet apart in the backyard while the kids played outside on the slip n slide and with the hose and sprinkler. No inside time at all. Paige made sure her kids all went potty before they left so they had no reason to enter the house. The other mom provided single serve snacks (individual bags of chips, baby carrot packages and something else) and requested that Paige bring her own drinks for the kids, which she would have done anyway.

I was happy for them. Paige got an hour of adult conversation with a friend, and the kids got some much needed social time.
