I work in a senior center cafe. A senior was sitting at a table alone eating breakfast. He asked me to sign a birthday card and have others sign it as well. I noticed he had a muffin with one candle in it. I asked whose birthday is it? He said it's my birthday. So i signed it and brought it into the kitchen for others to sign. We all exclaimed "ohhhhhhh, so sad". We invited him for lunch "on us". He did come back and I brought his lunch to him and rounded up the staff and we sang Happy Birthday to him. He was so happy. Just a small gesture can really make someone's day. Loneliness is hard. Costs nothing to be kind. 
....ask him if he'd like to receive cards or letters from overseas... I'd be happy to write to him if he has no family... or friends..
My personality I would probably have a pity party for myself. lol I totally admire him for asking and YOU going above and beyond to make his day special. 
That will probably warm his heart for a long time. Good Job
