When we retired from CA in 2001, we bought a 5th-wheel and truck and headed to Brownsville, TX after we got our truck and trailer registered/licensed and got a PMB.

A couple winters later, we had a hail storm. Everything in TX is bigger and that hail was the size of baseballs....no lie! It broke a couple shrouds on our trailer and left a couple dents in the hood of our truck that was backed in under a carport (those dents popped right out). My husband said he wasn't going to file an insurance claim because it would have raised our rates but several of the Winter Texans in the park filed for roof damage on their mobile homes and collected the insurance payments but never did repairs. My husband was an honest man and wouldn't have taken advantage of the insurance company. Other guys thought he was stupid for not doing it. I was always proud of his integrity.

Yes, I'm dealing with a damaged roof and have an insurance adjuster coming next week to look at my roof....and I'm dreading the probability of an increase in premium and the never ending search for affordable coverage...good luck on your shopping, Ken.

I remember Texas hail

On the way to El Paso
I-10 I think it was

Everybody was stopped
Zero visibility
We were getting beat to death
Noticed the hail storm was heading across the hwy
We crept forward and soon got out from underneath it
Rearview mirror showed everybody still getting pummeled

Yeah, they've got big hail

Big spiders too

Same trip
Tarantella migration
1000s crossing the hwy

That was some trip

Our insurance has gone up considerably because of the forest fires that destroyed other places in this province and the country.

I'm so sorry. Yes, insurance is another place people are getting it. Rates going up. I took my physical car off the plan since it's older. Still have all the other things needed. liability, non insured driver etc. Just no collision or comprehensive.

That's terrible! When we retired from CA in 2001, one of the main reasons we went to TX was because everything was so much cheaper.

We bought a lovely brick 3 bedroom, 2 bath house in 2004 in Victoria for $89,000. The property taxes were cheap and vehicle registration, plates, etc., were very reasonable. Of course, food was also much cheaper. Shopped at HEB and a weeks worth was usually $50.

We sold the house in 2007 and moved back to PA to be closer to family. Out of curiosity, I looked a Zillow recently to see what was for sale in Victoria and what the prices are. Although prices have gone up, I think they're still fairly reasonable. However, when I looked at the property tax, I couldn't believe how it's skyrocketed. I had read that because there's no state income tax, property tax has taken a hike to compensate for the "tax break" for no state tax. We homesteaded back then and I'm sure we got a small break but is homesteading still a good thing to help with property taxes???

I also heard that not as many retirees are moving to TX like in years past because it's gotten so expensive to live there. IDK if that's true or not. I had thought about moving back to Victoria but I'm not sure I could afford it now :(

Update... Found a carrier that worked with me to find the right policy...Saved me $1,300...She sure had a lot of horror stories as to what people are going through with their insurance coverage's!!
