Laundering a large, heavy knitted afghan

After that quilt disaster a few weeks ago, I am dubious about washing this afghan. Every time I move it, some of the fringe falls off and it has 2 "bumps" from where it had rested on the back of a chair for decades. It seems a shame to trash it. Not counting the fringe, it is 65" long and 39" wide. That's a lot of yarn. I just discarded another afghan, but that was small and in even worse condition that this (it had holes and bad cat odor). What would you do?

I fear it will disintegrate in the wash, Deb. All I can recommend, is, soak/wash in gentle cycle. I'd rather hang it to dry, but perhaps you have nowhere to do that.

If I did anything, I would wash it by hand and that would still be a gamble. Do you have anywhere that you could lay it flat to dry like a counter top that you could spare for a few days? If not, the next thing would be to let it hang dry and that might not be an option for you. That's all I can suggest. Good luck!
