Lawsuits Against Monsanto's Roundup Weed Killer Approved by Judge

Its been decades since I've used any kinds of weed killers or poisons on my lawn or garden, people are suing because they became sick with cancer after using the Roundup. More here.

Hundreds of lawsuits against Monsanto Co by cancer survivors or families of those who died can proceed to trial, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday, finding there was sufficient evidence for a jury to hear the cases that blame the company’s glyphosate-containing weed-killer for the disease.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria in San Francisco followed years of litigation and weeks of hearings about the controversial science surrounding the safety of the chemical glyphosate, the key ingredient in Monsanto’s top-selling weed-killer.

Lawsuits by more than 400 farmers, landscapers and consumers who claim Roundup caused them to develop non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of blood cell cancer, have been consolidated before Chhabria.

I always thought it was illegal to use over here but apparently you can still purchase it from behind the counter if you explain what it’s being used for. I’m so disappointed with this.
I use vinegar on our driveway. The weeds in our lawn stay there.
Im not into needlessly harming and possibly killing animals to have a nice green lawn either.

My sister and her husband have farmed for years and she has 10 huge pecan trees in her front yard. They use Roundup every week to keep their place neat. All the farmers in that area use it and have for years. Maybe they are just lucky or blessed as no cancer yet.

I use a generic form of Roundup to keep the weeds at bay on our gravel driveway. It does a great job, but I am very careful to use it only on a day with no wind, and Never around the garden....and I always cover my mouth and nose with a "painters" mask, so I don't inhale that stuff.

I sometimes use vinegar and sea salt for weeds in the cracks of my driveway, but don't fuss about them too much. Usually end up pulling my weeds by hand. I used to boil a big old teapot with salt water and pour it on boiling hot. The weeds in my lawn stay, with the drought like weather these past few years, I'm happy to have anything green covering the sandy clay soil to avoid erosion. I just mow those, was never a stickler about my lawn like some folks.

Starsong, I agree about Monsanto.

When I had a house I used the vinegar and salt also.

Monsanto Loses: Jury Awards Millions to Man Dying of Cancer Due to Herbicide Glyphosate – What’s Next?

This past Friday (August 10, 2018) a jury in California awarded Dewayne Johnson, a former school groundskeeper who is dying of cancer that he claims is the result of years of using the herbicide RoundUp which contains glyphosate, $39 million in damages, and another $250 million was levied against Monsanto for covering up the scientific evidence that glyphosate causes cancer.

This is the first legal blow against Monsanto for its herbicide product, which is the world’s most common herbicide, spread on crops all over the world.

In recent years, laboratory testing on urine and mother’s breast milk shows that almost the entire world’s population contains glyphosate in their bodies.

Health Impact News has covered this story for years now, and we published an interview with Dr. Anthony Samsel back in 2015, when he was able to obtain formerly concealed documents from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealing the toxic nature and cancer risk of the ingredients in the herbicide RoundUp, but were concealed from the public due to “trade secrets.”

Yes, Roundup is still used.
I still use it, you have to ask for it, because they lock it up.
Yes….there is over use.
I wear masks, gloves, and clothing to cover all my skin.
I use roundup on my property on the other side of my fence at the back…..to the back lane. I choose times when I know when no one passing by so it has a chance to dry…..calm days no wind…..and put up a sign to state spray has been used.
Back lawn, don’t use anything because of my guys, I dig out the nasty weeds.
On my stone areas in the back that is fenced off, i use vinegar/salt/dawn dish detergent.
The front lawn, I use broadleaf spray, with a sign stated….has been sprayed.

I totally understand all your concerns…..there are very many careless people that use without caution, and safety.

Why use Roundup on your property at all, given how toxic it is to living things and the environment? Just wondering.

Am I mistaken, but isn't Roundup still used?
Yes, Roundup is still sold at virtually every store which sells lawn and garden supplies. I buy a 2.5 gal. jug of the Generic version, Glyphosate, at a local farm supply store....every 2 or 3 years...to spray the weeds in our gravel driveway. A jug of this concentrate runs about $40, whereas buying the same quantity at a Walmart would be well over $200.

Yes, Glyphosate is harmful if a person is exposed excessively. However, virtually Every food product we buy has trace amounts of some potentially harmful chemicals....grains, meat, fish...you name it. Were it not for these pesticides, food production would plummet, and half the world would be undernourished, or paying twice as much for food.

Don, you are spot on. Most people will test positive for low amounts of Glyphosate in their urine. A lot of nurseries are suggesting that if possible, we should try to flame burn our weeds that are under 4 inches. A simple torch or other similar device passed over the weed should destroy the tissue in the weed. It will not destroy the root. I have only used it once just to try it. I was skeptical, but yes, it does work. I used a small Bernzomatic torch along the edge of the sidewalk where it meets the street.

I use it, sparingly and with precaution.

I watch the tree service people who come in to spray my orchard several times each year. Wearing only jeans and t-shirts with no masks at all, they walk through clouds of whatever stuff they spray on the trees. Then they stick flags in the ground warning that the area has been sprayed. I usually give the orchard a wide berth for a week or so after they have sprayed. Doesn't seem to bother the squirrels and other critters who live there though.

All along there were better, not toxic ways to grow food, to not pollute the water, to take care of whatever people think poisons are needed for - they are not needed in most cases.

The old good ways are forgotten, obliterated by modern marketing pollution.

The vast increase in disease from all the toxins, immeasurable but seen in the many people with cncr, dbts, hbPr, asthma, heart troubles etc etc etc

The relief ? Find out. Search for the truth. Search for the old non-toxic, non-deadly, non-diseased ways.

And meanwhile, look into anti-oxidants to include in daily food or fluid intake, to subdue when possible the free rradicals, the poisons introduced for a century that invade everyone willing or not, all because of pride and greed.

We don't use pesticides or non-organic weed killers or bug killers on our property. Granted, we live in the suburbs and don't have a lot of acreage, but plenty of neighbors have pest control companies spraying their houses and property with those poisons every month.

I've come to embrace Joni Mitchell's wisdom:
Hey farmer, farmer, put away the DDT now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees, Please...

apple cider vinegar, raw, unfilter, unpasteurized has been one of the best to protect from those poisons so many neighbors use, and corporations worldwide.
dry vitamin e with selenium also.

both daily.
