Leaves

I mowed the front yard this morning. This time of year the Magnolia tree sheds a lot of leaves. This is what it looked like this morning before I mowed.

The first year I raked and bagged them up and put them out at the curb. It took 18 of those 33 gallon lawn and leaf bags. Lot of work. After that I decided to just run over them with the mower when I mowed. My little mower does a pretty decent job of mulching them up.

OK, so it's not perfect, but it's good enough for a retired government worker.

Yup, mulching the leaves is the best way. The mower grinds them up, and mother nature turns them into good soil. I spent about 4 hours today going around under all the trees with my weed eater, and Husqvarna riding mower, and ground up a massive amount of leaves. I'll let them set for a couple of days...we're supposed to get more rain tomorrow...then Thursday or Friday I'll get the mowers out and do a good job of mowing the entire yard. With all the rain we've had this Spring, mowing every 6 to 8 days is almost a must.

Way to go. In the old days when we could do it....Burning them was the solution. You could tell what time of the year it was by the leave fires around town.....Ahhh those good ole days gone by...

I Love the smell of burning leaves. Every Fall, I blow/rake them off the road frontage into the ditch that runs along our gravel road. Then, I have a couple of hours of controlled burn to clear the ditch, so the leaves don't clog up the culvert under our driveway when the Spring rains come. One of the "perks" of living in the boondocks.

That's exactly what I do now... I use the mower on them. Up until last years I was raking up bags and bags of them, ... so now I mow them up, and burn them in the incinerator.. (one of the few things we're still permitted to do here ).
