Like sauerkraut ?

I was headed to the kitchen last night to make another glass of tea and mama had just watched something on the food channel that mentioned sauerkraut and she ask me if I'd ever tried it and if so did I like it......I told her yes I had as a kid and no I didn't like it.

Growing up every once in awhile my mom would fix sauerkraut with hot dogs or brats for supper and those were the nights that I would eat a bowl of Captain Crunch or a baloney sandwich for supper.

I like corned beef sandwiches and every now and then mama and I will go to a deli not far from home and I'll order a modified to suit me Ruben.......I tell them I want double meat, no cheese, no sauerkraut or secret sauce of any kind just dark rye bread, corned beef and brown / horseradish mustard.

Nope, I'm not a fan of sauerkraut.

Big fan of sauerkraut if you sweeten it a bit and cook it slow in the oven with a bit of butter and lots of caraway seeds. I will cook it for a couple hours - put it in a baking dish - spread it out and let it cook, covered with foil. Remove the foil for the last 30 minutes or so to brown it up. Its delicious with sausage and mashed potatoes! Otherwise its too stunningly raw and bitter.

Sauerkraut is one of the many items where there are probably more examples of bad then good....
I like it .........but not in every way prepared and some versions are inedible .... brands can vary greatly .....
All most need is one bad time and the opinion is formed......

Love sauerkraut. My dad would sometimes make his own. I remember when he made the brine and let it sit in a big old crock for days and then add the cabbage. It smelled through the whole house. When I would ask mom how long do we have to smell that, she would just shake her head. But it was good stuff. Mom would make a pork roast to go with it.

Yes, but not too often. Serve it on a Rueben or with Italian sausages.

Normally I’d buy a German brand from the International aisle. Last time I bought Strubs; it was too mild for my liking. There aren’t any packages sold here.

Grandma insisted that I have one spoonful of everything on the table. I tried to eat that nasty stuff without chewing, Grandma didn't know how close she came to having everything else I ate ending up on the table and not in its original form. I hate it even the smell of it makes me want to gag. So naturally DH loves it, he likes it cold out of the jar. When the kids were young they wanted what dad was eating so he told them "oh no, you wouldn't like it" so of course they begged even more. He would give them, each a string of it, "we love it daddy!", so he would give them a few for strings of it. All 3 like it still. Too bad grandma didn't think of that trick, although I don't think I would ever have like it , it is still nasty stuff!

Love it - drained, quickly rinsed (unnecessary if it's a really good quality brand, but the average commercial brine is pretty harsh); braised in chicken broth with onions and bacon bits - wonderfully savory.

Spouse had never tried it until I made choucroute garni, now he loves the stuff. Asians eat a lot of pickles; it isn't safe to eat raw vegetables in most of Asia.

I too, did not like it as a child but my tastes have changed as I've gotten older. Yes, sauerkraut is good for you and we have it once in a while with sausage or pastrami. I don't mind it out of the package (maybe it depends WHICH package) but I always heat it with the meat, and sometimes cheese. Yum.
It's funny how you taste changes as you get older. I used to love corn beef sandwiches. I remember slicing it for sandwiches and putting on some horseradish or mustard and really enjoyed it. For the last 2 cans of corn beef that I bought, the stuff can't be sliced. It just crumbs. I made a sandwich but these days I, for some reason, really hate the stuff. I will never buy corn beef again. I think from a deli it might be good but the canned stuff is only good for "prisoners of war." Sorry!

I like it just fine. DSIL and I are the only ones in the family who do. Rinsed and drained it's good on hot dogs or bratwurst. Rinsed and drained and cooked with chopped up apple and onions with a sprinkle of caraway seeds it's delicious. We don't have it often, but if DD is making sausage and fried potatoes, there's also sauerkraut for DSIL and me. Yum!

Like Sauerkraut?
Love it. It is one of my favorite foods. I like to cook it in a slow cooker for several hours with country style pork ribs. When it is just right (meet falling off the bone) I pour it over homemade mashed potatoes or between to pieces of bread with mayo. It is really good on a fried bologna, egg and mayo sandwich. Goes good with eggs too. I eat it a couple times a week. I also drink the juice/pot liquor when it's available. As a matter of fact I plan on eating some tonight cooked with a pork loin I have.

Grandfather made it when I was growing up,, I would ask for some when he checked the crock.

I like Sauerkraut.. make a salad /relish with it , let it set in fridge.
Also like it cooked with meat.

The last jar I bought was an organic one,,it was good.
