Listen to This Medieval Instrument

The first time I heard this instrument was in a DVD of a Loreena McKennitt concert: (I didn't know what it was called at the time)
The guy directly behind her is playing one:

I know the hurdy gurdy from all the medieval concerts I attended; it was also used for Robert Plant & Jimmy Page for "Gallows Pole"

I always wondered what a hurdy gurdy was. It was explained to me as a small child as something an organ grinder plays. But what the Hell was an organ grinder? I pictured a guy on the street turning a crank on a box supported by a stick, but that never satisfied me. And I always wondered why someone would want to turn a crank on a music box on the street. I can understand a little kid with his jack-in-a-box, but a grownup? OK, now I at least know what a hurdy gurdy looks like, and I certainly recognize the sound. Just never saw anyone playing one before.

Awesome! I've never seen this instrument before and the sound is amazing! The close-up views are fascinating! Thanks for sharing! I'll listen to the rest of the posts later today - On a rainy day, it's great to have some indoor fun planned!
