Living My Dreams In Retirement

Hello Everyone,

I hope everybody had a great weekend!

I am not sure what to write here so I thought I would share a little about myself.

I am married to my beautiful wife Kim and am looking forward to retiring from my UPS
Job soon and spending all of my precious time with her.

We like to travel all over the world and have been to to many places to count thanks to my
Great job at UPS. I have worked there for close to 30 years and Kim is tired of the long
hours and how hard physically it is on me. She is really pushing for me to hang it up...

I told her last weak that I was thinking of going until I was 67, another 8 years. Then she expressed
her real feelings on the subject.

Kim is really trying hard to get me to retire from UPS and shared a statement with me and it
really made me think. This is what showed me,

Retirement age is 67.
Life expectancy is 78
Work for 50 years to
maybe enjoy 11?
Start enjoying life
now. No one is
guaranteed tomorrow.

If that doesn't really get a guys attention I don't know what will!
This little statement really hit me like a ton of bricks. I decided right there and then
to rethink my whole retirement plan and come up with away to fund my retirement.

I am new to this whole online forum thing, but I thought I could get on here and
find out what other people are doing to be able to tell there bosses to take this job
and give it to someone else!

Anyway, suggestions would be nice and I can give people a few of my own thought.

Thank you for reading this and I hope to here some feedback on my post.

God bless you all!
Robert

Hi Robert from London, you'll find plenty of advice here, but I think your wife Kim is right. Don't worry about being new here, just jump in on any discussion you wish or start a new one of your own..

Welcome to the forum, Robert. You don't mention what state or region you're located in. It absolutely isn't required but it's helpful to other members in giving meaning to certain posts.

Deciding when to retire is a highly individual thing and depends on, among other things, your retirement income/savings/investments, the lifestyle you want during your retirement, and how much your current employment contributes to your satisfaction with life.

I chose to wait to retire until my wife became eligible for her full pension. By that time she was experiencing a degree of burnout. I rather liked my job but the two hour daily commute was getting very, very old. We knew clearly what we wanted in retirement and had sufficient resources to maintain that lifestyle indefinitely.

I've known folks who successfully retired in their 40s and others who thorughly enjoyed their careers right up to the point when they "could no longer climb the stairs". How do you envision spending your time in retirement?

Hi everyone,

Sorry, I just got back on here and saw all the great comments!
Thank you all for your stories and advice. I want to retire in one sense but
a little afraid to take the jump.
I will get a pension but is really not enough to retire on. I have started some internet
marketing activities to make up the difference. I will let you know how that works out.

My wife and I live in beautiful southern Oregon and we love it here.
We have done a lot of traveling over the years and I am glad we did
because of this covid pandemic traveling just won't be as much fun with all the restrictions.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Welcome Robert! Your wife is a smart lady. I suggest that if you have no debt and can afford to retire early financially, it's a good idea to do it. Life is too short in my opinion to waste it working until the very end and not enjoying the fruits of your labor. Good luck no matter which way you go.

I really enjoyed all the comments! I think that you are all very nice and thoughtful!
I am going to retire as soon as they get my paper work figured out, got lost in the mail.
I first thought that maybe it was a sign, but then I thought again that all things good are worth fighting for
and I really want to retire.
With all that is going on in the world I do not want to be away from my wife for a minute.
This is a crazy time in which we are living in and even though I am really not ready to retire I am
going to figure out how to earn some money from home so I can just stay home and take care of Kim.
I want you all to know that your comments really helped me get off the fence and I thank you all so much!

God Bless everyone of you and I pray that you will be healthy and safe!
