I have a Living Will and Advanced Directive. They place my end of life preferences in a written document drawn up by an attorney. They are legal in Connecticut but may not be legal in other states. My documents allow me or my surrogates (if I am non-communicative) to refuse all treatment including nutrition and hydration if am suffering too much and there is no hope of being cured.
Back in 2018 after being discharged from a hospice after being there three weeks, I almost stopped breathing. I called the hospice and they called the police emergency services. Two police officers and an EMS Physician came and insisted I must come to the emergency room with them or I could die. I showed them my Living Will and Advanced Directive. The EMS Physician read every page and then had me sign a release which allowed them to leave and allow me to die if my breathing shut down entirely.
I did revive a few hours later but it did prevent me from being sent to the emergency room of a hospital against my will. I could have ended up in a Nursing Home that way. My preference is to end in a hospice if I do go terminal.
I have seen on the internet that John McCain and Barbara Bush both ended their lives using those documents when they were suffering too much at the end of their lives.
