Lockerbie

I was a little surprised that no one mentioned Lockerbie on the 21st. It has now been 26 years when Pan Am Flight 103 was downed by a terrorist bomb that killed about 270 people, including those on the ground. I just can't imagine being one of those people on-board an airliner that blows up or crashes for that matter. So many documentaries always state that the passengers probably never realized what was happening, but that may or may not be the case. I think from what I have seen and read that when Pan Am Flight 103 blew up and from the computerized graphics that simulated the aircraft being destroyed with the hull being separated, I think that it is very possible that some of the passengers may have been aware of what was happening for at least the first 10,000 feet as they fell from the aircraft and it is even possible that they could have been conscious until they hit the ground. If the computerization has it all wrong, and I pray to God it is, then the passengers may have went unconscious just moments after the blast.

It just disturbs me that some a-hole decided to kill so many good people that had absolutely nothing to do with their cause. They are nothing but a pack of low-life cowards.

As far as I'm aware, there are still many bits of the aircraft still missing. The course it was on was a course well taken by aircraft from London to North America. North up the East side of England to North East England and then turn West to head out over South West Scotland and over the North Coastal area of Northern Ireland. Then it's out over the Atlantic. The point is that when it turns West when reaching North East England, it goes over an area of land called Kielder Forest, which happens to be the biggest man made forest in Europe I believe. At the speed the aircraft was going, it exploded over Kielder but the main body parts at that height just careered on and hit Lockerbie. It is said that many smaller pieces are hidden in the wilds of Kielder. A lot of us will never forget.
I do wonder in the light of recent Political events if the Scottish Justice minister would have released the guilty party?

Lockerbie was terrible. Not only for the people on the plane [and their relatives] but for a whole street of houses that was obliterated and literally pushed deep into the ground along with some of the occupants/children/pets.All happy and getting ready for Christmas. The Libyan bomber should never have been released. Disgraceful.

I'm sure the documentary on the Smithsonian Channel was very good, here's another video about the bombing that's online, such a tragedy.

It was on the Smithsonian channel that night. I wish I had watched but forgot it was on.
Being from the Syracuse area, I took a special interest in this disaster.

Yes, I think there was a group of 15 kids from some type of group at the University.

I also wish Scotland would have turned over the Dude that was considered to have been at least partly responsible for the planning. India had a similar event with even more lives lost.

I have driven past Lockerbie many times so that sparked my interest. My husband was driving past Lockerbie from London with his first wife and daughter the morning after it happened. He didn't know what had happened yet. He was heading to Scotland for the Xmas holidays as usual.

I have always wondered if any pieces of the plane are still being found. Do you ever hear of that happening?

All tragedies fade into history with usually only those who were intimately involved remembering them...

I watched a show on TV this week about what happened. I can't imagine they knew what hit them, but who knows. Maybe someone was strapped to his seat and got to sit there the whole way down. Jeez, wouldn't that be horrible?
