Leo Moody was driving home from work on a rural Maine road Monday night when he spotted an SUV submerged upside-down in shallow water. He called 911 and rushed to the vehicle. The driver and one of the passengers had freed themselves, but a frantic woman was still trapped inside.

She told him her baby was in the backseat, the
Associated Pressreported.Moody helped the woman out of the car and plunged into the icy water to free the baby. When he reached the 3-month-old infant, her body was limp. She wasn’t breathing. He told the AP he couldn’t feel his frozen hands as he sawed at the car-seat straps with a knife. The 44-year-old logger “kept telling myself, ‘Don’t drop the knife.’”

Moody said he keeps the knife handy for peeling apples or whittling wood. “They come in handy, I guess. Monday night really proved it,” he told theAP.
When he freed the infant, he passed her limp body to Wade Shorey, a 32-year-old forester who had happened upon the scene. “He passed the car seat to me and said, ‘Take it,’” Shorey told the AP.

“Her lips were very blue … the rest of her was the complexion of a pale doll,” Shorey told a local news station. He took the baby to the roadside and began CPR — he had completed a refresher course last spring. After a couple of minutes, he heard her “faint, slow breathing that was very, very raspy and gurgley.”

Then the baby began to cry. She was taken to the hospital for observation. The adults suffered minor injuries, were treated and released.

The accident happened on an icy road 175 miles northwest of Portland, when Stephen McGouldrick lost control of his SUV. The car with McGouldrick, the baby and two female passengers inside rolled down an embankment and landed in shallow water.

Moody’s wife told the AP her husband arrived home cold and soaked to the bone. “Just another reason why I love him – thinking of someone other than himself,” she said.
