Look After Your Cards

I have a Debit card, that I only use for Telephone or
internet purchases, I do have some money in it, but
not too much.

Last month, I called the local council, to remove a
large sofa, they have started to charge for the formerly
free service, so I filled in the form, online, but I couldn't
get to the checkout, so I phoned the number and spoke
with a man, he took the details and asked for my card
number, this is becoming rare here, but I gave him it
and the sofa was removed.

My account for the card was charged for a meal delivery
service, twice, The bank blocked the card and paid the
money back to my account, it wasn't very much, less than
ÂŁ50, but how many people are experiencing similar thefts.

I spoke to the delivery company, they wouldn't give me
any information, so I went to the Council and told them
that they had a problem, the bank also said that they would
involve the police, but, the police here are not very active,
especially for such a small amount of money.

Hopefully the Council will fix it.

I had to pay another bill with my new card and the person
I was speaking with, asked me to key in the number using
my phone keypad, her phone was a desktop and she said
that the numbers appear on her screen as *****, except for
the last 4 numbers, a much safer method.

Be alert, as I am sure that you are, but check after using a
card on the phone.

That scenario is why I don't buy online, or for that matter, pay by card. The manager at my bank did say that a credit card is safer, but I guess that depends on how much credit you are allowed. For as long as I can, I will pay by cash. It's safer and it's anonymous. I'm glad to hear that you were reimbursed, but you really don't need that sort of hassle.

Never, never, never use a debit card.
Way too much risk and no upside.
Credit cards provide you with 0 risks.
I disagree. If your credit card is charged you still have to pay the bill and a Theif can charge lots to your credit card, Best to use 2 step account verification on debit or credit cards. I just went through this on Amazon.

My debit cards have the same protection as
credit cards, plus there is no interest to pay,
if you live within your means it is the card to
use, I think anyway.

Nope, every time I have had fraudulent charges the credit card company not only took them off but issued me a new card AND called multiple days after when other charges showed up. If they were fraudulent, they took them off as well.

You are never responsible for bad charges on a credit card. Its the law.
I had thousands of charges taken off.

I don't know about you but I like free stuff.
I have gotten 10's of thousands of dollars in free stuff using points from credit cards.
Multiple trips to Maui, Ireland, 10-15 day stays at high end resorts, my kitchen appliances, so much stuff for free.
Airline, hotel, cash back.....all free.
I can't understand why folks wouldn't use a credit card. So many advantages.
When cash or credit charges the same, why not?

I added another account and keep a small amount of money in it and use that debit card for online and local shopping. That way if that is compromised, there is only a small amount of money lost.

I still have my ( small also :) ) main account. That way if anything happens, the time I could wait for the "fixing" is no problem and I don't have to go to the hassle to change my main account. Just have them change the "shopping" card. I just put some money in the other account as I spend or anticipate a purchase.
