Looking for a new lawn service

I'm tired of this guy I have now that is always late showing up from when he promises. He also won't cut the lawn to 2" saying that hurts the grass - he never cuts below 3.5 inches. I think it hurts his bank account since if he leaves it long, he has to come back sooner. It also looks unevenly cut. I was looking around on homeowner help websites and most now want to me to either supply the equipment (if I has equipment I could do it myself), or to pay with a credit card (these usually aren't local, but a referral service). I am dubious about the services that say, "Post your address and we'll refer you to our nearest affiliate."
 

Why oh why don't you spend a few bucks and buy a riding mower???? It's almost the end of the mowing season and there has to be sales on riders all over the place. It sure would save you the stress of getting the lawn to your specs because you could do it yourself!
 
What if you post an ad in the local paper (if there is one). Someone who wants to make a few dollars, and has their own lawn mower, might be interested in mowing your lawn regularly. Perhaps a neighbour wouldn't mind, as long as you offer to pay the going rate.

Gemma is correct....this time of year, the stores will have good prices on their remaining mowers. Unless you have a huge yard, a self propelled walk behind mower would probably do the job in a couple of hours per week....which would also offer you some good walking exercise for your "weight loss" objective. Keep a eye on your area Lowe's, Menard's, etc., web sites.
 
If I'm correct, Debs, with your recent eye troubles, you're not exactly up to cutting the lawn yourself. Google "Lawn Services" in your area. You're bound to find a few places, then call and they'll ask you some questions and more than likely send someone out to give you an estimate.
 
Does your church have people who will help out, either as a volunteer or for a fee?

We used two fellas from the church, one to install ceiling fans and another for some electric/drywall. We couldn't get them to take a penny. They did the jobs as a gift.

Maybe you could suggest if such a roster doesn't exist?

P.S. I thought that a longer height was better for grass as it couldn't compete with weeds if the grass was cut short. Hopefully, there won't be but one or two more cuts needed with cold weather approaching.
 
My lawn company tells me that they cut at 3”. That’s the recommended length by those in the business. He also does my trimming, fertilizing and takes care of the weeding. I get a yearly contract and instead of paying per cut, I pay for ‘x’ amount of cuts per year. Since I have irrigation in my lawn, the grass grows regardless of the wether being dry or not. I think my guy, which is actually a mom & Pop operation, does about 1/3 of the lawns in my development of about 200 homes. I have only heard of a few complaints.

Maybe you should ask around and get some recommendations and have those recommended companies price your yard. It may be to your advantage to get a contract with “x” amount of mowings per season with the beginning and ending dates on the contract. Like mine is March 24 through November 15. The grass grows well here in Virginia, especially with being fertilized 6 times per season. My guy also does snow removal, but the HOA covers that part.
