Looking for advice from those with type 2 diabetes

I was diagnosed at the beginning of November. I changed my diet right away. @dilletante, gave me helpful advice. I have lost some weight and overall have felt much better. The changes seem to have lowered inflammation in my body, aches and pains less, most of all less migraines or less severe.

I had to have a couple of teeth pulled a couple of weeks ago. Not pleasant at all, I am better now. Thing is with the pain, the pain meds, etc, I have not been eating as well. I have felt awful, migraines back, joint pain back. Lightheaded and hot flashes.

What do you do, your sick, in pain, have no appetite, much less the energy to spend time cooking, Most of the food has been toast and broth. A liittle cheese and uncured deli ham. Are these hot flashes related to high or low blood sugar?

I have bought a tester but have not learned how to use it yet. I don't see the doc until 2/6 to check my A1C again. She wanted to see if diet and weight loss helped. Should I be concerned, should I go ahead and go now?

Tester: Insert strip. Prick finger. Bleed on bottom of strip.
Call the manufacturer if no written instructions included. It is important, at least twice a day, morning & evening

When a diabetic is sick or stressed, including teeth work, the sugar level usually ups.

What meds are you on, or is it just dietary changes for you? If you are on meds, CRUCIAL your glucose does not go too low.

I am taking a oral pill, something like glipizide for the diabetes. I tried metformin but it gave me too many tummy troubles. The pain med has only been tylenol #3 with codeine.

I will try to work the tester soon. I am in a migraine spell right now. I do have the instructions. I was not worried about doing it until after I saw the doctor again, she did not say anything about the need to do it now. I just know I feel bad, you know how the anxiety gets rolling, I just fall apart.

Diabetes is different for each of us.

I take a cocktail of oral meds each day along with a shot of insulin and a weekly shot of Ozempic.

I test several times a day, when my numbers are up it’s usually because I’ve eaten too many carbs containing refined white flour, sugar, etc…

If I stick with small quantities of whole grain foods, vegetables, fruit, nuts, beans, and meat things stay on track.

If I add cows milk, sweets, etc… my numbers get out of hand.

Exercise helps bring my numbers down and gives me a little leeway in my food choices.

It’s almost impossible for me to change the habits of a lifetime, I will be content if I can avoid amputations, strokes, etc…

My results are never good enough to satisfy my PCP but they are good enough for me at this point in my journey to the cemetery.😉🤭😂

Good luck in finding your own way of dealing with this disease.🤗

Get back on that Exercise and eat lots of fresh foods. Leave the fast and prepped caned stuff be.
Forget bottled crap & enjoy fresh cold water. I don't think an occasional piece Dark Chocolate will harm.
When your hungry a raw green bean, Tomato, Peas, carrots etc. are wonderful tasting. At first you're
gonna say this costly but actually you aren't being teased to eat more by the products you consume.
Long term survivors are usually very thin / scrawny not bulked up with muscles, rolls of love handles !
_________

Forget all modern fast foods, beverages ect. They harm ya, leave Velvetta in the supermarkets shelves.
Shred fresh bricks of good pure cheeses. Leave the Glued meats and packaged hams / meats be. Buy fresh.
______________
Basically, there are not one item on a store shelf that is prepped, Canned, bottled or packaged that is gonna do you any good.
If you enjoy a glass of wine, make sure the label does not include preservatives. They are like swallowing poison.

I use the freestyle. The censor goes in my arm between my elbow and shoulder and is good for 14 days. I like it because it tells me automatically on my phone when I have a high, but more importantly when I get low.

Been using it for years now. Is expensive unless you have a benefit, or service that pays for your prescription. I would use nothing but that, it's bang on and is monitoring me 24/7 for 14 days. I have mine paired with my cell phone.

Something to think about... There is another brand out there that does a similar thing. My diabetic office can download my readings as soon as I walk into their office. Gives YOU graphs on how your numbers are high and low. and my A1C usually is bang on when I get the blood test done where I get my blood tests done...

I trust nothing else now that I use this... A little video about the freestyle and the other one... Hope that helps, and Good Luck...

I wish I had got that condition that only allows white food LOL. I am a big lover of bread, potatoes, pasta. I have a sweet tooth but have doing fine with sugar free jello or pudding.

Normally I do allow myself one slice of toast for breakfast but it now is a healthy whole grain bread. Lots of eggs, beans, salads. I put the dressing in a little dish on the side and dip instead or drown it. A lot of protein, changed a lot of products to sugar free but you must always read the label so they don't replace with fats or carbs.

I used it for a while but it became too expensive for me.

It taught me a lot about how my blood sugar changes over time and is much better than taking a finger stick reading before meals.

If you can afford it or if your insurance will cover it, it’s a great tool.

Funny you would say that, having some shrimp cocktail tonight but it is poached. I could not imagine eating raw shrimp. Are you talking about a ceviche? I could do that.

I've got to get back on track from the holidays.
I have the Freestyle Precision Neo. I just take my fasting blood sugar in the morning. I try to keep it under 100.
I've learned to drink a little water before I test. Also, be sure to clean your test finger with an alcohol pad even if you've washed. That will give you a more accurate reading. Once you've followed the directions a few times, made some mistakes, and wasted a few strips, you'll get good at it.

Read, read, read all you can about this disease. And test, test, test especially after each meal one hour and two hours after. l had to use a meter, and test strips are expensive. l wanted my doctor to approve me getting test strips through Medicare but she said no because l was doing too well Of course l was doing well because of those expense strips and testing, testing, testing! The testing is to tell you which foods are are good for your blood sugar, and which are not, You can do this Blessed,

The doctor tried to force this on me. I gave it 24 hours. It was constantly indicating a low blood suger reading. If I tested my blood with a finger stick, my reading was close to 20 higher than what the continuous glucose monitor was indicating. The worst of it was when it woke me up 5 to 6 times during the night with an alarm and showed a reading as low as 50. When I took a morning finger stick reading, it read 110. So at no time was my actual bood reading as low as the CGM.

I took the reader off my arm and have slept through the night ever since

The funny thing was that my doctor never asked me about it at my next office visit.

When I first started on my diabetic journey (2015) I was testing 5 times a day. Needless to say I have adjusted my thoughts. I get all my non-prescription supplies from Walmart (syringes, insulin, strips, wipes) I was thinking the lower my glucose count the better. I was having episodes of too low glucose count (60-70 shakes, confusion) I was aiming for 90 as my upper limit, my diet was geared towards a good low count. (5 units each shot, never had to adjust above that)

The doctor kept warning me to raise that count every 6 months. He wanted to see 110 to 120. I soon learned that the average was anywhere from 80 to 130 for normal. I got it up to 100-110 felt better, no more episodes or tiredness. & the doctor (new) was asking me who diagnosed my diabetes, He stated I had good counts. Keep my A1C below 5.2. I quit testing as often, now down to once a week. I still take 4 injections 2 SA R before meals & 2 LA N every 12 hours.

I had cut out sugar loaded sweets & breads. Found sweet potatoes, oatmeai, 1 cup of coffee with whole half n half, brown rice, roasted chicken only & beans helped my count as well as anything, eggs are eaten whenever & are my go to if anything. I quit soft drinks, no alcohol, no smoking & walking keeps it under control. I quit worrying about the AM spike. Fruits (mostly bananas, no grapes or raisins), veggies (no peas or corn). Veggies raise problems with my colon, so have to make sure they're fully cooked (soft). Complex carbs...

uncooked and then cooked, say with pasta, alfredo sauce, dip or on most anything, steak, ect. Lol - pre-set a limit, say no more than 10 _ _ LOL.
Precooked shrimp always seem chewy to me.

I agree with the precooked thing, they also have no flavor. I cook from raw but I do admit I still hate to peel the little buggers. I never had a shrimp boil until I met my husband. I was happy to try them but he had to peel them for me LOL!

Well, tried the meter again this morning. Had success, just don't know if it is the good kind. Blood sugar was at 135. I must admit I felt sick at my stomach last night and ate a few saltines before bed, not a good idea, oh well! I will check again tonight an hour or so after dinner.

The key is to eat foods that don't spike your sugar levels. You never want a reading of 200 or above.
Search the internet for a list of foods that are best to consume if you're diabetic.

Saltines will cause a rise in your blood sugar.
There should be a glycemic index on a reliable web page, you can find that will show you which food to avoid.

A Type 2 diabetes journey has to be highly individualized.
Would suggest requesting an appointment with a diabetes educator to help you get to the point you do not have Type II diabetes.

The only thing which distinguishes the terrible medical consequences of cancer and or Type II diabetes is that YOU can completely get FREE of Type II diabetes with no medication at all, if you work hard enough with diet control and exercise.

In cancer: exercise and diet control don't work. The horrific results of unmanaged diabetes cannot be understated; those results can easily be as bad as cancer.
