I'm wondering why they bothered to open when they plan on extending their stay at home restrictions.

Surf's up! Los Angeles beaches reopen – minus sunbathing
Los Angeles County beaches reopened Wednesday after a six-week hiatus, but no sunbathing allowed. The county will follow regulations in place for other beaches on the left coast, meaning activities such as walking, running and surfing are cool but gathering, sitting and team sports like volleyball are not. A six-foot social distance and face covering are mandatory. Oh, and one more hitch – beach parking lots remain closed. The opening comes hours after public health Director Barbara Ferrer said the county's stay-at-home restrictions, set to end Friday, will likely last for three more months.

As someone who lives in Los Angeles, perhaps I can shed some light.

Opening beaches in a limited way is intended to allow people to get some exercise and to escape summer heat for the much cooler temps at the beaches. (Often 20 degrees or more.) There is street parking available and all beaches belong to the public. No private beaches in CA.

County & city lots are closed to prevent massive crowds. Social distancing rules apply to people who aren't housemates.

If people follow the guidelines, they will probably be further relaxed as time goes on. If not, the beaches will surely be closed down again.

Thank you. 🌹 It wouldn't have hurt the paper to have added a bit of information regarding the protocols of opening the beaches.

The beaches in Naples FL opened and are promptly shutting down again. No compliance with social distancing.
