Love Those Prices

Dug out some old photos when I was produce mgr. for a local supermarket back in the 60s. Check out those prices. The butcher and his wife ran the meat dept. Apples, 5lbs., 43 cents. Also, We give Green Stamps signs in background.

Those prices do look so awesome ! But I remember that back in the mid-60s, when my grocery budget for the week was only $15 , so even with those cheap prices, you still didn't get a whole lot of food.
Chicken was only 29 cents a lb, and a stewing hen was even cheaper. I usually got the backs and necks, which were only 19 cents a lb, and then made it into a pot of chicken noodles, which lasted for a couple of meals.
We could get a whole 50 lb bag of potatoes or onions for around $5 and that would last a good part of the winter .
One of the best things was gas.....only about 17cents a gallon with the price wars we used to have back then.

I remember S & H Green Stamps well. They were wonderful to have.. I would collect the books until I had enough to go to their stores and turn in for some very nice items... small kitchen appliances, yard gear, and many baby items. I wasn't working then, and at home with three little kids.

Great pix.....

My mom collected green stamps. When I married we moved across town and it wasn't convenient to shop at the one and only store that gave them. I remember her getting some nice things with them.

Growing up on a dairy farm we raised just about everything we ate. I don't know much about prices then. Balogna was a treat for me. Gas below a dime.
