Lumens versus watts - I can't fathom

I know it's been years but, I still feel confused about these measurements of lightbulbs. I dread buying new bulbs.
It used to be so simple, I knew a 40w bulb was dim, 60 fine for a room. 100 nice and bright.

What's a simple way to cope?

Lumens are the amount of light bulb puts out. Watts are the electrical energy needed to produce light. Old light bulbs and the new light bulbs produce light differently. For the old light bulbs, watts used to be a good indicator of how much light the old bulb put out. That doesn't work with the new light bulb, which use lumens. There are charts which tell you watts vs lumens.
