My old Dad had MD in his later years, and it really cramped his lifestyle...no driving, etc. As a result, I checked with my eye doctor, years ago, and he recommended a daily Lutein pill and Fish Oil capsule...as preventative measures. So far, that seems to be helping, as my annual exams show the Macula doing ok.
This is one of the many "aging" conditions that we must deal with, and the sooner we take action, the less likely that it will become a major issue.
 
I have taken AREDS for 7 years, I hope it is helping, I'm still able to drive and read.
