MAD Magazine

Your school library had comic books in them? Where did you go to school? Hicksville?

Yeah right. We had to sneak them in. Our nutjob librarian would send anybody to the front office who was reading non educational literature or necking in between the book racks. Hicksville huh? Lololol. No Hempstead in Junior high & Central Islip in high School. I used to hang out though at Divide Tower and Bethpage Tower. Learned a lot. That siren and horn at Hicksville Firehouse could wake the dead. I could see it from Divide.

Did you sneak them in by putting them inside a Real Book? That sounds familiar, as if I did a thing like that! šŸ˜‡

No we had to sneak them in under our shirts, the library policy was that we were not allowed to bring anything in for fear that we might steal a book (GOD forbid us hoodlums would risk our reputations getting seen by our peers with educational stuff like a book or a pen).

Hello, Madsters! It is a very cool surprise, finding this forum.

I would like to ask for help, if I might.

I remember an article in Mad--somewhere between 1957 and 1965 or so. It was a collection of short poems about dogs, and was one of the most charming and funny pieces I've ever read. But I only recall fragments, some of which I recited to my daughter's delight and she's been begging for more for years. So I've been trying to find it, but to no avail.

One of the poems went something like:
"Oh woe is me, alas alack. It
Must be tough to be a bassett.
Looking so depressed and dismal,
Like he needs some Pepto Bismal."

another was:
"Like an orange that turns up juiceless,
The pekingese is just plain useless."

If anyone knows when this article was published, please let me know.
Thanks to all and any who can help.

Tim

I have a Mad magazine Chinese restaurant menu that's hilarious .. somewhere.
The dog article is before my time, but will keep an eye out for it.
I found the Chinese menu, @Pinky . It is, as you said, hilarious!
