Going to retire at 63 in January. I'm not so afraid financially as afraid that I will become that lady in pink fuzzy bedrooms shoes coming out to get the newspaper at noon.:)

A newcomer! Welcome.

FWIW, I took the retirement plunge 3 times, the first the result of work lay-off, the second in response to political impropriety in Washington, and the third "stuck", when Social Security finally swung open it's vault doors (just a smidgeon, actually), to let a few paltry dollars spill out and return to my eager "grouch-bag". imp

thank you. I am trying to figure out what life will be like without work. I was 15 when I went to work answering the phone for the TV repairman.

Hi Maddie, I worked all my life and took an early retirement....been absolutely loving retirement, no rules, just right! ;)

The secret...IMO...is to stay busy. Retiring to the TV/couch, and keeping a bowl of snacks handy is NOT the way to go. Find something you like to do, and go for it. Personally, I wouldn't want to go back to work for twice what they were paying me...and the "to do" list always seems to be growing.

There is going to be a "transition" period...a few days/weeks...while you readjust, and then the good times start.

Hi Maddie

My husband and I had a home woodworking business for 15 years. My husband started working FT at a job he liked, so we slowed it down, no longer doing shows/markets. I continued the mail order portion until I felt bored and burned out. I never really felt "retired" but wasn't sure what I'd do next.

I was 66 at the time my current 1/2 time job came along. It's a challenging, rewarding and fun job helping others find relief from chronic pain and other health issues. Some days when I'm really tired, I think I should quit working, but I'm not ready to go back to retirement just yet. I could play computer games 10 hours a day, but that gets pretty lonely.

Good luck to you, Maddie and welcome!

I went out at 59 and was busy as a beaver for two years and took a part time job which I have now done 3 1/2 years (20) hours a week ....it is the best thing I ever did, 63 now and thinking about giving up the part time work....I have had no trouble keeping too busy....enjoy it will be the best thing you do....

Welcome! I remember being a little tentative about the change too..and I was 60 when I retired..but I've made it five years and hope for many more. The first year was amazing..such freedom. Enjoy!

A very warm welcome to the forum, dear Maddie.

Life does not end with retirement. Freed from the mantle of work, you will now have the time to 'find yourself' spiritually, creatively, in a multitude of ways!
And, if you so wish, you can make use of yourself doing charity work and so forth.
It's the dawning of a new age ...

thanks for the nice words of comfort. I'm sure I'll be fine. Normally I worry quite a bit then things end up being much better than expected.....thus, the positive of being a pessimist.....LOL
