There are probably other magnesium threads around here but I'll start this one re: osteoporosis. We are talking about this on another health group and the member was talking about starting Fosamax, a no no in my book. More dangerous than good.

I've been taking way more magnesium for probably 20 yrs or so and get my calcium from foods mostly and count on Vit D3 too. All in all my bones are strong and I don't bother with bone density tests, had one about 20 some yrs ago but I love to teach myself and heal myself as best I can.

There is plenty of info on the Mg deficiency in the U.S. for sure.

Can't have enough magnesium threads. Nutrient supplementation is about absorption as much as the quantity is. That means take in certain forms, combinations or before or after certain meals. I know people who eat alot of cheese. That's when I would take a D or mag supplement.

Just like you Jam, I've been using magnesium (citrate) for a long time for bone health, had one scan years back which showed beginnings of osteopenia and didn't have another one since. They recommended high intakes of calcium supplements which I disagreed with and didn't comply. A big part of my reason was knowing that excessive calcium can block the arteries and cause strokes, heart attacks and dementia. I'd rather have a broken hip than a major stroke like my FIL experienced causing paralysis and other serious effects.

I've also went to using D3, k2 and get my calcium from my diet. Magnesium and Potassium "citrate" should always be taken with adequate amounts of water. Lots of benefits from magnesium, I use the supplement, the oil and now and then take an Epsom salt bath.

Hmmm... this is an old thread that I'm going resuscitating because I've just been diagnosed as being deep into osteopenia and a hair under osteoporosis. My mother suffered two broken hip episodes due to osteoporosis toward the end of her life - a possibility that worries me, but not quite as much as what might happen to my cardio vascular system if I start taking calcium supplements.

Have any of you had updated bone density tests to learn your current bone status? I'd so appreciate info or studies you can point me to with respect to osteoporosis self help (beneficial exercises).

Thanks
