I've had more than my fair share of dog smooches and although rare apparently it's not the safest thing to do to let your dog or cat lick you.

Some things are freak occurrences. It's very sad. Of course some diabetics have to have their limbs amputated too.

I saw that and simply don't know what to say. Almost sounds the guys immune system might have been pre compromised or his dog wasn't in a controlled/clean environment. He wanted to live. Best of Luck to him.
