When is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras 2023 falls on Tuesday, February 21, 2023

Nothing about Mardi Gras is predictable – not even the date. Unlike Christmas or the 4th of July which always fall on the same calendar day, the only thing you can count on for sure with Carnival is that Fat Tuesday will fall on, well, a Tuesday. That’s because the date of Easter is tied to the moon (it’s always the first Sunday after the full moon that follows the spring equinox) and Mardi Gras is tied to Easter.

Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual Lenten sacrifices and fasting of the Lenten season.

Funny, I heard on the news this morning that in preparation for Mardi Gras they were greasing the poles (with vaseline), so people couldn't climb up them to the balconies.

I went to a Mardi Gras parade this afternoon. It consisted of a rather nice New Orleans-type marching band, one truck and about 20 decorated golf carts with people throwing beads, candy and coins. It was about 10 minutes long and then we went and got some beignets from a food truck.

That's about as much excitement as I can take these days....LOL. I've always dreamed of going to New Orleans for Mardi Gras but from what I see on TV, it might be a bit much. Maybe next year, we'll go to Mobile for theirs. It's the "original" one, anyway, so they say.

Your parade today sounds perfect for me!

My fanciest Mardi Gras costume, many years ago. It was rented, I didn't make it, or wear it long, but it was fun.

Those poor terrified chickens. That is cruel.
Maybe, but cock fighting is still widely done in Louisiana, so its not so bad in comparison. The older tradition was to steal a chicken from each farmer for the community gumbo, but today most people buy a chicken at the store and leave it on their porch for the "thieves". Supposedly the tradition has its roots in medieval France. https://iotamardigras.wordpress.com/history/

I have some Mardi Gras necklaces, but I didn't have to do what most woman have to do to get them. A guy that worked in the lab was a native from the Big Easy. He'd go down there and get a bunch to bring back and hand them out to the other employees. We'd also have a king cake he brought in. I also have some dubloons I remember getting at a garage sale many years ago.

Fat Tuesday is here! This is a very Mardi Gras song, even though they don't mention it.

All you have to do to get the trinkets is be there, you'll come home with a lot. You don't have to participate in the "throw me somethin mister" "show me something sister" exchange. However it is appreciated.

I went to the Marci Gras one year and got food poisoning the second day I was there. Spent 2 days in the hotel room recovering and as soon as I felt better, I left. My girlfriend enjoyed herself. She went out the one night and came home with about 4 necklaces of colored beads. I laughed and asked her “You didn’t.” She said “Yes I did.” Oh well. Kids will be kids.

I bought a king cake at the grocery a few years ago and was disappointed it didn't have the "baby" in it. But thinking about it afterwards, it was probably left out because some people may not be aware of this custom and might have swallowed it or chipped a tooth because they didn't know it was there. The store doesn't want a lawsuit.

Choking hazard.
