Meals on wheels

Do you or have you ever gotten meals on wheels? Do you know anyone who does?
 

I knew several people who did and I also did some volunteer work for them a time ago. Too bad their funding may take a big hit soon.
 

My mother had it years ago and it was a big help to her. I can't remember the cost back then but today the cost is around $7.50/day for a hot meal and a cold meal, they provide you with a chart that shows the daily menu and an alternate so if you don't care for the main offering you have another choice. Our local meals on wheels accepts food stamps and also provides subsidized or free service based on need and income. One of the big advantages of meals on wheels is the fact that someone looks in on you five times a week. If you are not sure about it you could arrange it on a trial basis for thirty days or so and cancel it if it does not suit your situation. I think in our area you have to allow three days to start or stop the service.

These days I'm thinking that a person might be able to put together their own version of meals on wheels if they did not need a subsidy. I'm thinking about using services like Jet, Schwan's and local grocery delivery services.

I'm sure he was very appreciative, not everyone has people around them who are able to assist, must be nice to never have been in need, if only life for all were as simple. I don't need the service, but, being connected and understanding the different make-up of varieties of communities and access to others in and around them I get it.

I wish I could know who and when every person in the neighborhood has a need and were able to in some way provide for them. Services like MOW, are given information via social workers or other social organizations, sometimes this is the only way, they find out some elderly person is withering away not getting a proper meal. But, why should anyone care, not in my backyard, so one thinks. Always easy to make light of others peoples trying times when it hasn't any affect on us I guess. Not that any of us feel that way.
 
I have a friend who gets them sometimes, but she admits that they often go uneaten. She doesn't like being wasteful, but sometimes you're just not in the mood for whatever they bring.

Yes it going to be bad when funding for this necessary service is eliminated. My mom is in her mid eighties and is worried for others who will no longer even get one meal a day. The senior center where she lives provides a free lunch for seniors in affiliation with the meals on wheels program. This will end, maybe sooner than later. I don't know how concerned seniors like my mom can pick up the slack in providing for those less fortunate and in need. There are just too many and she needs to look out for herself.
 
afaik Meals on Wheels was never meant to be a federally funded program, and only receives about 3% of its funding from the Federal government. Something on the order of $250k.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
 
It's a wonderful program. Not only does the senior get a healthy, well prepared meal it is also a mini visit they look forward to. Added benefit, if the volunteer notices something wrong they can make a report and the family will be contacted.

Very true. Good point. It's such a help to so many without other options for a meal and it provides them with human contact.
If the U.S. could win back to back world wars, create nuclear weapons, put men on the moon and send space probes to every planet, surely we can find a way to feed our own people?
 
When I worked for the public health service in our area many people got Meals on Wheels. The meals were very good and if they predicted any kind of bad weather the following day and delivery would be impossible they put in and extra sandwich,can of soup ,milk or juice and some cookies. Know one went hungry because of the weather.
