Measles in the Pacific Islands!!!!

I don't know where this should go, News, Health or General
forum, maybe all three.

We in the "West" are ignorant about measels today, because
for so many years it has/had almost disappeared, then all the
"Scaremongerring" about the MMR Jab, caused parents who
knew no better, to not have their child/children vaccinated.

Now we are getting epidemics all over the World, yes even
in London there have been large increase in the number of
cases, they were initially blamed on migrants, but it was traced
back to the fact that the children who were ill had not been
given the MMR Jab.

I don't know what you all might think about this Jab, but the
crisis is so bad now that the Rugby teams of Samoa and Tonga
carried the vius back to their Islands after the Rugby World Cup
or some other tournament in New Zealand, the result is that a
number of people died, mainly children under 5 years, but some
adults too have died.

We must, in my opinion stress to our grand and great grand children,
the severity of the illness and that they have to help their babies to
live long and healthy lives.

Mike, when you and I were young, measles, mumps and rubella were 'rites of passage'. I well remember catching mumps and the doc. coming on a house call. He looked a me, laughed and gave his diagnosis "You've got mumps". Rest, fluids and something for the pain.. Then there was the time somebody in primary school caught German measles and within days, half the school (me included) had it. I expect that all the girls were pleased. There were probably a few rubella parties in the town.

Polio was the feared one and then vaccination came along. A sadistic doctor and a nurse with a degree in patronising, stuck a needle in me. I had a bad reaction to the vaccine (or the vaccination) and was laid up for two weeks. I suspect it was my fault because in those days doctors were always right.
 
Yep parents really do have to be educated on the importance of the vaccinations...

However , like you Capt lightening, I had Mumps when I was a kid, and I remember my sister having chickenpox... . never had measles, and yes I remember the TB and Polio vaccinations very well. I remember my mother getting TB it was very worrying..... the latter 2 are extremely important for parents to ensure their children be vaccinated against..

In James Michener's book "Hawaii", he tells how the whalers brought measles to the Hawaiians who had absolutely no immunity to the disease. An incredible number of them died from it.

I had every type of measles there were.....along with chicken pox, mumps and whooping cough. I was a walking "disease sponge". Then three of my sisters had chicken pox at the same time. My poor mom.
