Thank you for saying this, @Llynn ... there are a few things bugging me more than usual this year for some reason. One is what you mentioned, but another is the lack of respect for what is a solemn day. I saw a local social media post this morning asking where there are any fireworks in the area tonight. I mean good gracious! No, not all. Only those who gave their lives. Veterans Day is for the rest of us who served.
Well, I remember all. My dad and grandfather receive flags on memorial day on their respective tombstones and neither of them died in a war or service. They did serve during wars but survived. It's good enough for me.
My town did those things today... parade to the cemetery that had flags placed a few days ago.... and then a few speeches, etc. No Taps, though, although that would have been nice. We do a 21 gun salute instead. @Been ThereI remember the small town cemetery back home that decorated each grave in the Veteran’s section with a flag courtesy of the local VFW. At 10 a.m. a Chaplain would give a short sermon and then a retired Veteran from the VFW or the American Legion would play Taps. I don’t know if that tradition is still alive or not.
Thank you. Too many people forget the real meaning of this day of remembering and honoring those who sacrificed the lives for this country. No, not all. Only those who gave their lives. Veterans Day is for the rest of us who served.
