Memorial day

Two weeks ago, I was at my parent's home (both deceased) and while going through my mother's boxes, I found letters from my father to his parents while on the battle field in Italy, WWII. He was in the 10th Mountain Division 85th. Of course, he never spoke about it to us, and I understand. He was injured, at some point, and received a Purple Heart. Most of the letters thanked his parents for sending food, because they had no rations to speak of. Thank you to all of our Troops on this day.

No, not all. Only those who gave their lives. Veterans Day is for the rest of us who served.
Thank you for saying this, @Llynn ... there are a few things bugging me more than usual this year for some reason. One is what you mentioned, but another is the lack of respect for what is a solemn day. I saw a local social media post this morning asking where there are any fireworks in the area tonight. I mean good gracious! 😤 I was glad to see a lot of people setting the poster straight. Another thing that gets me is saying "Happy" Memorial Day... no, it's not a happy day for any of us who've lost dear ones who sacrificed all.

I remember the small town cemetery back home that decorated each grave in the Veteran’s section with a flag courtesy of the local VFW. At 10 a.m. a Chaplain would give a short sermon and then a retired Veteran from the VFW or the American Legion would play Taps. I don’t know if that tradition is still alive or not.

My town did those things today... parade to the cemetery that had flags placed a few days ago.... and then a few speeches, etc. No Taps, though, although that would have been nice. We do a 21 gun salute instead. @Been There
