Mental Health "Experts" are Making Jobs for Themselves

I cannot believe this. Canadian kids, thousands of miles away from the action are worried about events in the Middle East. Hey, no problem! Apparently there are hundreds of mental health "experts" that will tell them not to worry and that everything is A OK! My, my! Suddenly there are mental health "experts all over the country and available for all sorts of counseling. Hey! Kids, Scared of Halloween? No problem, Just see a mental health counselor.

I think it's important not to use broad brush strokes and appear to label all Mental Health Experts with the same brush. These people do import work. But - particularly in the US - they have a "for profit" model, so you end up with self-appointed nobodies.

In Canada it's somewhat different, but it's worth noting that any self-proclaimed "expert" is probably full of it. Self-promotion is in, doing the hard work to justify the title is out.

I know world events can be upsetting to a point maybe if you have a connection to affected area etc....
but as Packerjohn has pointed out...... especially in school systems they have many " counselors" to help but in fact creating their own work ... some kids feel weird or odd if they are not upset over something on the other side of the world. Made to think all items should have them in a panic needing to talk with someone.

My daughter just got an apology phone call from one .......yesterday
after a 5 minute observation of my grandson a first grader who is very shy ... this trained counselor decided he had a speech issue and anxiety because he was not conversing with kids he did NOT know. yet week 2 in school
Counselor suggested a pediatrician visit and in depth therapy ...............she had grandson's teacher send this letter home ...
when daughter met with teacher and principal .. grandson was playing and laughing with kids he knew on playground while adults met 15 feet away....... IT was crystal clear...................... that what the counselor said was verbatim the page... IF you googled shy kid ......... had apology from teacher and principal right then and teacher tore into counselor for having the teacher write a letter to a parent that was all made up psycho babble.
Counselor told daughter was her first job and they were told to look deep not just surface ........pretty sure this will stick with her as my daughter set her straight.

Their logic is new or different problems require new and different kinds of so called experts. The names and events maybe different but it comes down to coping skills in this case.

There's over 'specialization' with a lot of things and those issues frequently already fall under somebody else's specialty.
