This morning, about 6:00 am and still dark, the young spaniel and I were up, time for her to go out for her morning bizness. I turned on the flood lights, looked out the windows (nothing seen), grabbed my pistol and out we went. She went to the back fence, a few feet from which is thick brush/trees, barked a few times, then stood there frozen in place and emitted a low growl. I immediately called to her to "come", she did and we came inside.
Lots of acorns and berries right now. Bears are getting ready for hibernation and gorging for winter. I am now closing windows at night, partly because it is getting cool (in the high 40's at night) and also to keep out any wildlife seeking food. A large bear could force its way through a door or window if it were motivated enough. A pistol by the door and one at the bedside. Hopefully, it will be enough to stop one if necessary. It occurs to me that removing a large bear that is bleeding all over the place and/or dead might be quite a chore. 500 lbs? Or more? Whatever would I do with that carcass??
That would be a pretty large hole to dig...
