ABC 7: More research needed on impact of COVID-19 vaccine on cancer patients, UCSF doctors say

A specific case out of UCSF is highlighting the need for more research into the COVID-19 vaccine and its impact on cancer treatments as the highly contagious Delta variant spreads rapidly across the Bay Area. The news comes a day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released an updated warning the vaccine may not effectively protect immunocompromised patients.

There needs to be a better understanding of what constitutes being immunocompromised. For example, is someone with common but active Epstein-Barr (i.e., most common herpes virus) immunocompromised and, if so, to what extent.

My husband has cancer. It was important for him to get vaccinated because his immune system was compromised from chemo & radiation. Doc said if he would have contracted Covid, he would not have survived it. After treatments, he waited the allotted time then went and received both doses of Moderna.

He still takes precautions...keeping a safe distance from people he doesn't know, will wear a mask when needed, washes his hands, uses sanitizer, etc.

If a booster is required down the road, we'll get one.

Smart thing to do. Our best to him and you.
