Just learned about the story of Alexis St. Martin. A poor guy who was shot in the stomach in 1822 by accident. For 10 years a doctor performed experiments in his stomach.
While it did advance medical science, and the doctor gave the guy room and board, the bargain wasn't exactly on the up and up for the young man.
Alex actually lived to be 78 ... almost 60 years with a hole in his stomach.
