Movie Streaming

I have bought a media player (to view my exrternal hd on tv) as no usb in

Apparently I can connect to a router to view streaming videos on line

How do I connect ?
What is a good streaming site ?

Thank You

We have used Netflix for several years, and I really like it, and there is also Hulu+, which is very similar. If you have an amazon account, they also have a lot of good movies you can stream.
I have an Apple TV, so it comes with all of those, except Amazon, but it has Apple iTunes movies and songs as well.
If you have a stereo hooked to your TV, then Pandora and Spotify are also great for streaming your favorite music, or radio programs.

I have a Roku player, which in addition to the usual Netflix, etc that are mentioned here, Roku has a bunch of it's own movie, music and information channels, weather and news sites such as NBC, FOX, CBS, etc that they contract with. Most are free, some have a nominal charge, you pick what you want to pay for. Streaming is a different cat than network tv,but lots of good stuff to watch anyway and I never miss tv and all the commercials.

The three major streamers are Netflix, Hulu+ and Amazon. Netflix in my opinion has gone downhill since they lost their contract with a major movie supplier.

Depends on what kind of media player, and there are many.

I cannot connect my Roku to a hard drive, but I also have a Sony, which does connect with a USB hard drive or a LAN ethernet connection. The newer Roku3 DOES have an ethernet co0nnection.
Both will connect wirelessly to a wireless signal... wireless modem or wireless router. Connections to the TV also vary, as in RCA jacks, HDMI, SPDIF, 3.5mm connector etc, S video etc... depending on the media player.
Newer versions of these or other players have different ways of connecting. Chromecast allows use of tablets, phones etc.
Newer TV's have the player built in.

Rather than try to walk through the many, many players and other means of connection, I'd suggest a session with someone who understands the vagueries of streaming... including the new Chromecast which takes it's content from mobile devices and uses an app. It's easy to get confused, and the type of streaming player will determine the ways of connecting. Also, as far as playing movies from a hard drive... not all players will play all video formats.
Searching YouTube for your particular media player, will probably give the best instructions...
My Sony Player has Youtube built in... My Roku does not, although there is a workaround to to allow it. There are nearly 1000 movies that become available on You Tube... A search engine for these YouTube movies is "pegleg.it" .
Am pretty happy with $8 netflix... As mentioned, there are hundreds of specialty streaming sites. IMHO, most of the free ones, either have too many ads, or less interesting content. To see some of the offerings, try googling "free tv".
My guess is that within a few years, there will be a revolutionary change in the way we watch TV... As yet, no clear cut winners that I can see, but "content" will be the driving force.
In my limited experience, people who have media players, learn their own player's features and limitations but don't realize that other "brands" have different features... thus the suggestion to get specific help.
Good luck.

We have netflix and Apple tv too, Happyflowerlady. Tho we have alot to watch with Apple and very happy with it, I was surprised that we were unable to get Amazon also.
