Sometimes as we get older we revisit music from our youth that we "just didn't get" at the time. I still don't understand opera or classical and that's okay. But I was just thinking of this topic the other day. In the bookstore was this beautiful picture book tribute to Freddy Mercury. I mean I was a teen during the reign of Queen.
But I never really got the joke or the music, or what a soaring set of pipes Freddie had...nevermind the looks, the biggest overbite in rock and he made it sexy as all get out. Another genre I couldn't grasp at the time was jazz fusion. The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Billy Cobham, and all the spring offs influenced by them.
I mean now I can listen and it's a natural high. But at sixteen you can't hear it yet.
Oh and Freddie
