Musical "The Phantom of the Opera"

A question especially for the ladies:
Why did Christine hesitate choosing Raoul? He is handsome, rich, a Vicomte de Chagny and loves her wholeheartedly. Instead she feels driven to the Phantom. We know that he'd helped her and taught her how to sing. But is it because she took pity on him? Or is it his fierce but also passionate character?
Whom would you choose?

Love the musical. There is no good reason logically why christine would choose the phantom and she had no desire to do so. Maybe to make Raul jealous she pretended to. Theatrically it shows good conflict and a second infatuation. Phantom is ugly outcast but still loveable not unlike the hunchback of Notre Dame who loves the gypsy girl by V Hugo. Raul and phantom are 2 opposites

Thank you very much Victor for your answer. It's in fact illogical, but at least it creates a good arc of suspense. Two characters of men, one (Raoul) good, the other (Erik, the Phantom) ambivalent. Years ago I read a poll with the result, that most of the women who answered, would prefer Erik(!) Perhaps Raoul is a litte boring in comparison to Erik.
And I love the musical too.

I bought (expensive) tickets to Phantom for my daughter's 15th birthday. Neither of us enjoyed it. I wasn't aware of the story line you refer to. It must have gotten lost in the singing and special effects.

Before the stage musical made the rounds, I was aware of a 1925 movie starring Lon Chaney, but I never saw it.

NorthernLight, what a pity that you bought such expensive tickets and you and your daughter even didn't like it. The movie with Lon Chaney is a real classic:

But I have another suggestion: "Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street". It has nice music, but is - at least in the movie version with Johnny Depp - very sanguinary. And the unforgettable Alan Rickman in the duet with Johnny Depp is phantastic.

I saw Phantom on Broadway in 1989. I wasn't as thrilled with it as I expected to be. wassat However, I liked the 2004 film because I enjoy Emmy Rossum. She's a good actress and has a lovely operatic soprano voice.

Who knows why Christine chose the Phantom instead of Raoul? The 1925 film starring Lon Chaney as the Phantom is fabulous. I adore him! ❤️

I liked Sweeney Todd, but I would've liked it more if it wasn't a musical and it wasn't as gory. Alan Rickman is a terrific actor, period.

BTW there is a sequel on stage that I saw but don't recommend In it the phantom has a baby with christine!! He becomes likeable too and rather nice.
