My back porch roof is an ecosystem

The shingles, and wooden structure under this goo, are probably showing significant rot. One day, the whole thing will probably collapse...just hope you aren't under it when it goes.

Last year I went out and pried up all the growth. There were light patches under the colonies, like the shingles had bleached. The moss and lichens came back with a vengeance this year. A rofer that came last week took photos when he was up there and it looked like a lot of hairline cracks. He wanted $2300 to re-shingle.

Well, it doesn't look good.
Re-shingle will just cover up the growth of the stuff for awhile. It will still grow.
I would suggest tearing off the old stuff to see what is wet and rotted underneath.
