One of my sisters had two pugs; one has taken the pug express to doggy heaven but the other one is going strong. They were both clowns.....you never knew what they'd come up with. Pugs are just natural entertainers and the best snugglers you'd ever want. Of course, they were bred as "comfort dogs"; one of their duties was to settle down on the "bound" feet of Chinese ladies to keep their feet warm. Bound feet had poor circulation. They were also "sleeve dogs" - the ladies would carry them in their sleeves. Of course, they must have been a lot smaller breed in those days; if I wanted to carry her pug in my sleeve, he'd have to be duct taped to my arm and I'd need a very heavy-duty sling.
Speaking of fat pugs, I once ran into a couple who were walking five extremely obese pugs around the neighborhood. One had flatly refused to walk another foot and was being carried. They explained that they were pug rescue people and that the dogs had been given up by an elderly lady who had to go into a nursing home. She had overfed them severely and they were being "slimmed down" before being put up for adoption (the average pug will eat until he explodes, unfortunately). They said the dogs were very unhappy about the situation and begged constantly. They didn't care a hoot for walking, either, except to the food bowl. I know how they feel.....
