My Ceiling - Leave It Or Change It?

Personally I’d redo it
The beams run not only in the kitchen but also into the adjoining living room. A friend here in the park has the similar setup and did that only they painted the beams a dark teal colour and put a huge picture over the fireplace that had the same shade of teal as the dominant colour. I thought it looked nice but when they went to sell the realtor told them that most of the critique was about the teal beams.
Thats the problem with getting overly creative with a personalized style. It cuts down the resale value and who wants to redo the whole thing if and when you are ready to sell the house.

I understand about the personalized style. The little house my SIL moved into had chocolate brown walls in the hallway, living room, dining room & kitchen. The two smaller bedrooms were charcoal gray, the largest bedroom & the only bath was deep maroon. It was owned by a bachelor, who sold it to another couple who never changed the color while they were there & their furniture didn't match the colors at all. When I found the pictures on-line of when he had the house for sale, the color scheme made sense.

Sometimes, you have to look past the color that someone has at the time of sale. After two coats of primer & two coats of lighter colored paint, it doesn't look like the same house. Paint works wonders.

Sometimes I think it looks like the ceiling in a Swiss chalet, other times kind of reminds me of a church.

The previous owner covered the beams with Mactac, that press on stuff some use for lining shelves. I know it is plain white under the Mactac as I took out a ceiling fan.

So do you think it would look better plain?View attachment 275294
Beautiful kitchen Lee and sweet furbaby. I think it looks fine the way it is, but if you want to make the dark beams white, that would be nice too.

But that is a high ceiling and a big job Lee. If you plan to make the change, please get someone in to do the work for you. In my opinion, it would be worth the cost. Once you seriously injure yourself on a high ladder, especially at our age, it can be life-changing. No going back after that.

Good luck with whatever you choose, but please rethink doing it yourself. Be careful dear lady. 🧡

When I see home buying shows in which the homes have ceilings like yours, the prospective buyers always go crazy over them. I would probably leave the ceiling as it and find elements such as a couple of wooden flower pots and a colorful rug featuring earth tones (to replace the one at the sink) that would compliment the brown on the ceiling.

I'm not crazy about vaulted ceilings in general. The beams are too skimpy for the large space.

I'd either paint the beams white or put in a normal height ceiling altogether.

I would definitely lower the chandelier, it's way too high up. Otherwise I love the kitchen, I wish I had a white kitchen, too.

How often do you look up at it?
For me, a ceiling is there to keep the rain out.
More importantly, what are we having for dinner?

I like your kitchen, especially the backsplash... and most of all Riley! I'm in the "paint them white" camp.
