i had to pay the IRS $19, they chased the check and the next day did again. called the bank and they said it was from the IRS end. Now I have to go into the back to figure it out but will that flag me to the IRS, should I wait and see if they fix it or let it go. bank says I have 60 days to look into it on the banks end.

Of course the bank said it was the IRS's fault. And while the IRS may have made an error, the bank also failed their duty, but they have the ability to claw back the money from the IRS. Perhaps wait a week to see if it self corrects but then I would be going up the chain of the banks customer service dept until they resolve the issue. Thankfully it's a small amount.

I had a bank honor my car payment check twice. First time on a Friday, and again on the following Monday. I really didn't have the extra money at the time to cushion that. I had to fight with them for over 2 weeks to get my money back, when it was obvious according to their own print out, as what had happened. I wouldn't have minded had they said, pending an investigation result to the contrary, we'll credit you immediately. Soon as I had been reimbursed I went elsewhere.

I just went through a similar situation this last week....kinda. When I bought my car in December, I originally financed it but in January, I paid it off. Can you believe 8% interest and I have a 850 credit rating! Outrageous! Sorry...different rant.

The dealer tacked on an "Easy Care" extra warranty for $1865. I didn't realize that I was already covered for those same "services" with my auto insurance, so I contacted the dealer in January when I had the car title in my hand to have them cancel that and refund my money.

I got busy with other things (still settling up final decisions from hubby's death in October) and forgot about it. Last week I contacted the dealer again because I hadn't heard anything from them. They told me to call the bank where I originally had the loan and they would have to refund me the money. I called the bank. The bank told me to call Easy Care. I called Easy Care. They told me the dealer had to do the refund. Oy vey!!!

I called the dealer back and relayed all this merry-go-round conversation and, guess what, "Oh, yes...we cancelled that warranty in January but it takes a couple months for Easy Care to get the refund to you." WHAT???

That sure is an "OY VEY" scenario!
This stuff is outrageous!

Colleen -It sounds like you have a very good handle on all of the paperwork that a spouse's death can generate!

A couple I know has a good income, from SSA and pensions, and they help their kids a lot with money- but the day will come that, when the husband dies, (and he is recovering from serious surgery) that the wife will only have one income, her SSA. They do seem to have a savings account but sometimes that is never enough, when one has lost a spouse.

Finally got around to go to an estate attorney yesterday and had my will made out. All I can say is....my son and my husband's kids are going to be very mad. Charities will be helped.

I hope she understands that her life will change drastically in more ways then one. I wish them well.

Well that shouldn't have happened for sure! If after a week to 10 days, it hasn't been corrected, I recommend you have a sit down with your banker and ask how they could have allowed that to happen and insist that your account be refunded.

For sure, what Miss Diva said. Next time it could be a much larger check.

And no, you won't be flagged. Only the FBI alerts the IRS, and only when someone's under investigation for a major financial crime.
